Did you know that CCSD negotiated, paid for and received access to FLOCK camera surveillance data in LOWES PARKING LOTS - not only in Las Vegas, but also Mineral & Storey Counties, Carson City and even Reno? Wouldn't that money be better spent by investing in safety and education for CCSD students?

Clark County School District actively negotiated with Flock Safety and GOT ACCESS to cameras at Lowes Hardware Stores all across Nevada.

Las Vegas residents were never asked if they wanted hundreds of AI surveillance cameras in their neighborhoods. Why?

I spent the last few days looking into Flock Safety cameras, and what surprised me wasn’t the technology.

It was how they got here.

Hundreds of AI license plate reader cameras have been installed throughout the Las Vegas Valley. These cameras automatically record passing vehicles and capture information such as the license plate, time, location, and vehicle characteristics, creating searchable records for law enforcement.

What concerns me is the process.

  • There was no public vote.
  • There was no request for residents’ consent.
  • Much of the deployment was funded through the LVMPD Foundation using private donations, rather than through the normal public budgeting process. That meant far less public scrutiny before the cameras were installed.
  • Nevada has relatively limited statewide regulation specific to automated license plate reader systems compared with some other states, leaving many policy decisions to local agencies.

This isn’t about whether you support police using technology.

It’s about whether a surveillance network affecting everyone should be expanded without meaningful public discussion.

If you support the cameras, that’s fine.

But shouldn’t residents at least have been informed and given an opportunity to weigh in before hundreds of them appeared throughout the valley?

Here’s a map showing where many of the cameras are located:

Learn more about what these AI cameras actually do (don’t worry, it’s just a short):

I’m interested in hearing both sides. If you think this is a good system, what level of public oversight do you think it should have? If you think it’s gone too far, what changes would you want to see?
