Considering opening this card and looking for advice.

I travel 1-2 times per year with my family. Often times we need to bring at least one checked bag due to kids (~$90 roundtrip). We have a flight in two days.

AMEX is unable to expedite the card and I will not receive the card until 7-10 business days.

1. Is it still worth opening the card today or wait until I return?
2. How soon can I redeem the benefits? If I open the card today and get the instant card number via email, can I link the card to my skymiles and get the checked bags for free?
3. Do I add the checked bags at the airport?
