RG SP Pearl Blue - Button Swap

My pearl blue RG SP arrived and it's a really lovely color.

Swapped the face buttons between this and the RG34XXSP, and really like the end result.

Fitment:

  • The D-Pad from the 34XX is a bit thinner so there are some noticeable gaps around the edges (5.9mm vs 7mm)
  • The back buttons do not fit at all. They are a bit taller and thicker on the 34XX, so the back case wouldn't close when I tried to reassemble it.

Dorstenia Advice - grey stuff on tip

Hey all,

For quick context, I am based in Australia. It's currently still Winter, however it's been a pretty warm Winter so my plants never fully went dormant.

As you can see from the photos, the main head on my Dorstenia has dropped all leaves, but also has noticeably shrunk. The tip (where the shrinkage is) is also a bit mushy and has this grey stuff all over it.

This is my first year owning a Dorstenia, so I haven't gone through a full growing cycle with it yet.

Also note on the soil substrate, it's a pretty well-draining mix (40% commercial succulent mix, 30% pumice, 30% lava rock).

In any case, I'm certain it hasn't been overwatered because all the other heads and caudex base itself are very solid, it's just the mushy main head that's concerning for me.

If anyone can help me identify what's going on and if there's a bigger underlying issue here, I'd be very grateful!

2nd attempt at thread grafting + general Winter Maple pruning

My first attempt at the thread graft failed last year due to a mistake I made trying to "expose" the cambium layer of the whip when it was too thin, and accidentally ended up killing it.

This time I'm attempting it in 3 key locations to try and improve filling in empty areas of the trunk, and let each whip thicken naturally inside the holes. Now we just need to wait for the growing season.

The first tree unfortunately had some dieback earlier this year due to a mistake I made with being too ambitious on the root pruning during repot last year + defoliation this year. You can see some of the 'dead' areas on the main trunk where it browned, and causing the associated branches to die off (which I've already removed.

Everything else is standard pruning, with some of them being more aggressive this year since I really wanted to remove all long internodes/reverse taper, and achieve more of a Shohin profile.

General thoughts appreciated! This entire hobby for me so far has been killing/ruining trees due to my mistakes and learning from them for the next one, and I'm trying some different things this year so a second opinion is always welcomed.

Moved office locations earlier this year, and now I have not one but THREE parking buddies

We usually have random cars parked in-between us because we all seem to start at different times, but today the stars aligned. I came back to this after finishing work to see our cars all lined up and couldn't stop smiling.

I'm the blue STi btw.

Japanese Maple - Where would you go from here?

Hi all,

It's Winter in Australia and my Maples have finally dropped all their leaves (very late seasonal change this year).

I have this JM that I've been cutting back each year, and this year I'm looking to prune it further to make it more compact and remove the long internodes.

I'm a bit stuck on where to go with the design, due to it starting with one trunk and then splitting off into 2 without a clear leader.

First pic taken from the front I've chosen, and other angles also shown.

If possible, some illustrations using the same pics with drawing on which branches you'd cut would be appreciated as I work better with visuals.

Thanks in advance!

Winter Care for Dorstenias/Euphorbias

Hey all,

I've got a new spot this year for my plants (as seen in the pic) which is targetted for direct sun in the morning until about 12pm, then full shade for the rest of the day.

It's my first year with this setup, and it's worked really well for Summer/Autumn, however it's the middle of Winter now in Australia and I've been noticing this spot gets wet whenever it rains.

Our seasons have been really weird/late, so you'll probably notice my plants haven't entered full dormancy yet, despite the rainy weeks.

I have a fully protected undercover area with some partial filtered light through the roof (about 2000 lux as opposed to 9000 lux from the new spot), so I'm wondering if I should be moving them to this area despite not having entered full dormancy yet?

I imagine it's better to have less light than increased risk of root rot, just wondering what others typically do. I'm mostly worried about the leafy species pictured.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. I'm aware 2 of those are Winter-growing species; they will be kept in this spot.

Euphorbia Coerulescens

Just got it today. I believe the label has a spelling mistake.

So I've got a bit of a diecast collection

I know that the VA and VB are missing, but I live in Australia and those 2 chassis are either impossible to find or extremely expensive (at least on ebay).

If I could, the ones I'd get are probably:

  • EBBRO 1/43 Subaru WRX STI 2014
  • Hi-Story 1/43 Subaru WRX STI EJ20 Final 2019
  • MARK43 or HobbyJapan 1/43 Subaru WRX S4 STI Sport R EX VBH

Might add a Forester STI mini at some point too.

Anyways, the models (from left to right) are:

  • Hot Wheels Red Line 1/64 1998 Subaru Impreza 22B STi
  • IXO 1/43 2001 Subaru Impreza STi
  • Hi-Story 1/43 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX STi
  • AutoArt 1/43 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STi
  • IXO 1/43 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX STi

Unfortunately couldn't stick to a single brand and just got whatever I could find. My only criteria was that they were blue with gold wheels, and also an STi.

They all normally sit under clear acrylic cases but took them off for the photo.

Surely I'm not the only one that collects models of their own car?

Dokkan Checklist Updates

Hi all,

I wanted to take the chance to advertise my dokkan LR & DFE checklist website once again, as it's been almost 1.5 years since I last posted about it and its had many updates since.

Find it here: https://dokkanlist.github.io/

Notes & Features

  • Its simply a checklist tool first and foremost, and probably won't ever be more than that (as there have been requests to show unit info or let you click and open up the relevant profile on dokkaninfo or something like that)
  • I've added many EZA-related toggles, a nice visual way to keep track of who has had each kind of EZA (or hasn't yet) I think
  • Switch between the LR checklist and DFE checklist via the graphical button in the top-right
  • Import/Export your checklist between browsers (generates a base64 hash)
  • The reason for this feature is because the data is stored in your local browser session storage, and probably won't have account support since it's hosted publicly on github
  • Added a lot of nice visual icon backgrounds/animations, heavily inspired by https://www.dokkandb.com (thank you dokkandb)
  • A Generate Image feature is also available, but it uses a separate module to do so and image quality may not be the best so I'm considering whether or not this feature is actually needed, as I think most people would just screenshot their checklists - please let me know

That's all! I'm very open to feedback and suggestions but otherwise quite happy with its current state.

Hope some find it useful.
