Where are some places that are good to escape the heat for the month of August and still “affordable”?

I work remote and I’m looking to escape the summer heat in the U.S. for the month of August and explore another country/region. Ideally someplace safe and affordable and with good food. Someplace with a little culture would be great as well but not mandatory. Good public transport would be a bonus too.

Things I’d like to do:
Learn about local cuisine and take a cooking class
Find a way to give back while there
See some great art and go to live music
Maybe even learn another language

Budget for an apartment: $1k for the month

Would love to hear about places you’ve been. Thank you for any help!

What city did you meet the kindest people in and what stood out?

Meeting new people is one of the best parts of traveling. I’m curious which cities have really stayed with you because of how nice the people were? Was there a particular story that stood out, where someone went the extra mile for you just to be kind?

Is the High Line in Hell's Kitchen also?

I am on the mailing list for a lot of the city parks and received one recently from the High Line saying that the High Line winds "through the iconic neighborhoods of Hell's Kitchen, Chelsea, and the Meatpacking District" (4th paragraph down). Just curious if there is a part of the High Line I missed that is in Hell's Kitchen, as far as I knew it ends close to 30th Street @ Hudson Yards? Thanks in advance for any feedback/insight!

Perfect furniture is dropped in my building trash - Help

I live in a building where people move out and leave their perfectly good furniture and other items behind. Maintenance just places it all in the trash room where it piles up. Literally everything from sofas to bed frames to desks, tables, etc. gathers there every week in these huge piles. Sometimes other tenants will take something but at least 80% of it gets tossed out. It seems so wasteful and I’m curious if anyone knows of any service or group that would want it or pick it up? It’s a higher-end building and the furniture is often pretty decent. There’s also luggage, lighting, dishes, literally everything. I care about the environment and yes, I know it’s New York, but thinking there has to be a better way. Note - the building management couldn’t care less.
