The Royal Theatre was originally built in downtown Benton Arkansas in 1920 as the "IMP" – Independent Motion Pictures.

The box office, marquee, and vertical sign were added and the late 1940s.

The "ROYAL" sign came from a theater that was being remodeled in Little Rock. For many years, the Royal operated as a movie theater under the Kaufman family.

In the early 1990s, TV actor Jerry Van Dyke owned the Royal, along with a soda shop next door which is now been Burger Shack, owned by the Moody family since 2006.

In the year 2000, Van Dyke left the building to a theater troupe called Central Arkansas Community Players, which soon became The Royal Players.

The building has hosted countless plays and musicals, political forums, film festivals, talent shows, and more.

It was placed on the national register of historic places in 2003.

This legendary landmark was refurbished by Arkansas Sign & Neon.

It was gone to their shop for about a month but was returned on June 18, 2026, just in time for everyone in downtown Benton to see it at the Third Thursday street festival.

The Royal Players received funding from different places and are still fundraising.

One source in particular was Arkansas Questers International (Pinnacle Chapter). They recently presented a $8400 check to the organization for this specific use.

Visit www theroyaltheatre.org to find shows and tickets, and get info about beginning a member ($20) or making a larger donation to support the arts at The Royal.
