Bike as transportation?

We're headed to the park next month. We've got a great site at Seawall and will be camping three nights.

I am not a fan of cars. I do like driving them (though I am a fantastic driver), and I like passenging even less (because I am prone to car sickness). I know our campground is a bit far from the main action, but it does look like some of the trailheads would be within an hour, 1.5 hour ride, but I'm also wondering what the roads in are like. It looks like the shoulders on 3 can get rough?

I do not savor jockeying for parking or racing to be the first person out of the campground in the morning. When I'm camping, I really like to enjoy my morning coffee at a leisurely pace while listening to the birds. If biking the entire route to some of the trailheads isn't realistic, is there some less competitive parking spot where we could park the car and cycle the rest of the way to the trailhead? Is there any way to lock a bicycle safely near the trailhead parking areas? Bikes are flat bars with wide (42c and 35c respectively) gravel tires. We are one very serious rider and one hobbyist who just got off a 165 mile, four-day tour but who is not the biggest fan of steep climbs or descents (but is happy to hike-a-bike for short climbs).

Another dead neighbor, another driver without consequences.

The driver turned into the crosswalk without looking and now another neighbor is dead. Meanwhile, the 114th precinct seems to be doing nothing about it, yet again.

Unsafe turning (failure to yield to the crosswalk and bike lane) is the number one cause of pedestrian and cyclist injury and death here, but it's almost never ticketed.

D&L Canal Trail One-way?

Any good solutions for bike portage on the D&L canal. We are only two, and are considering riding from Wilkes-Barre to Bristol, but we only have one car. The only portage I could find was $400 for a private van, but this feels like a lot of money for what it is and what we need, and presumably it would be cheaper to rent a second car at that point. Any better options?

Jersey Devil Hunt experiences

My wife and I have been really tempted by the Jersey Devil Hunt route. Has anyone here done it?

We're planning to head out in late June. My wife is not the most into climbing or traffic, but we've ridden the GAP/C&O and Erie Canal trails together and had a fantastic time. I've currently got 28s on the bike I'll be taking, but I can fit 38s on my current I believe. We did GAP/C&O with my 28s with no problem. Has anyone done it on these sorts of tires?

Looking more closely at the route, it looks like there's quite a bit of on-highway riding, and that it may be busy as it will be high season. For anyone who's done it in summer, was that the case? Are we idiots for wanting to do this ride?

There's a lot to recommend the Third Ave bike lane over 1st Ave on the east side, but it seems like there's a surprising lack of connection to the Queensboro. Am I missing something, or are there no good routes that don't send you back over to First Ave?
