Shout out to this incredible handmade sign outside Steinway Moto

I was walking down 30th Ave and feeling genuinely dispirited by all the AI slop posters in the business windows, so when I turned the corner and saw this I had to go inside and compliment them on it. The shop owner told me his kids made it - even better!

Hope this can be an example for other shops. When you choose the low effort, cheap, lazy option to promote your business, it does exactly that - it portrays your services as low effort, cheap, and lazy. People crave substance, humanity and effort, and these days it's increasingly easy to make yourself stand out by giving it to them.

Sweet older cat looking for adoption!

I've been fostering this 12yo sweetie the past few months - he's a former colony cat turned indoor cat and you'd never guess he's an old man.

He does his own thing most of the time, but loves treats, spending time in the same room as you, and loves pets. He's very vocal and silly!

He's toothless and very healthy. If you're interested in adopting him, it would be through the Brooklyn Animal Action and I can connect you!

Fruit Stand Guy (FSG) by Broadway and 46th

Hey just letting folks know (because someone posted about it a while ago) - the fruits and veggie stand guy there is just on vacation. Kids bought them month-long trips abroad, so they're livin' it up! They'll be back when they're back, no worries.

We're tolerating this in the neighborhood now?

Be who you want to be, but I don't need to see this shit promoting racist violence walking my kids around the neighborhood after work.

Free cat food for senior kitties

[CLAIMED]

Hi, neighbors.

Our sweet cat passed away last night. He gave us a wonderful and cuddly seventeen years.

We would love to pass on the food we still have for him for a family with a senior cat, plus some cat litter if you need it, pictured here.

Pick up at Ditmars and 37th, and if you're not too far away I can also bring it your way, just DM me.

Cat tax as well, because he was the handsomest boy and our hearts are aching today.

Astoria v Ridgewood

I’ve (34/male) lived in Astoria for 9 years and now my girlfriend and I are relocating into an apartment in Ridgewood. I like Ridgewood because it has a comparable neighborhood and cultural atmosphere to Astoria. Still, I’m apprehensive about how I will find the experience living there.

TTDR: Any former-Astoria Ridgewood residents, or former-Ridgewood Astoria residents want to comment on what it’s like living in both neighborhoods and what is preferred?

PureGym Ditmars sucks, need gym reccos!

Hey there!

I’m currently a member of Puregym ditmars (ex Matrix Fitness) and I loved the gym but am so disappointed by all the changes. The sauna is most likely gone, it’s messier in there now, but my last straw is the paper towel dispensers being empty! literally so gross. I know not everyone wipes down after using a machine, but for those who do, this is just unacceptable.

If anyone already canceled their membership and moved to other gyms, where did you go?? Would love any recommendations for other gyms in the area please! I don’t have a car so hopefully it’s 10-15 min walk or train/bus ride.

Don’t care about much other than the distance, a fair price point (i pay $70 rn and wont go above) and a sauna would be nice.

TYIA!

I built YourScene a local discovery app for finding what’s actually happening nearby

Hi
I’ve been building a side project called YourScene.

It’s a local discovery app for finding events, watch parties, bars, venues, and things happening nearby.
The problem I’m trying to solve is that local discovery still feels scattered. In places like NYC, Brooklyn, Jersey City, and Denver, people are checking Instagram, Reddit, Eventbrite, venue calendars, Google Maps, group chats, and word of mouth just to figure out what’s happening tonight.
I’m trying to make something that answers:
“What’s actually worth going to near me right now?”

A few things I’m building toward:

smaller local events, not just huge promoted ones
watch parties and fan spots
neighborhood-based discovery
filters for low-key / not touristy / small crowd / 30+ / family-friendly
live local posts through Pulse, so it’s not only scraped listings
better trust signals for venues and events
It’s still early, but I’d love feedback from other builders.

What would you focus on first: better event supply, better maps, stronger filters, community/Pulse, or onboarding?

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/yourscene/id6777555961
Bugs/feedback: support@yourscene.app
Appreciate any honest feedback.

New Barbershop - Off The Top Astoria

Just passed by this new shop last week during their soft open. Looks like it used to be menz kave but new owners took over and renovated the whole place with new barbers. Place looks super modern and barbers did a great job with my haircut. Owners were extremely friendly and offered me a bunch of goodies so thought I’d post here to show support for a new business where owners are from neighborhood for once lol. They also have a pokemon card machine if anyone is interested in that.

Late night health restaurants? (Open until at least 11pm)

As the titles says, just looking to see what everyone is eating later at night when they don’t necessarily want pizza or a burger? I’ve had shawarma/ halal a ton lately so also looking to stay away from that for tonight.

Appreciate any and all recommendations!

Tru on Ditmars

Does any one know what is going on with Tru on Ditmars? Its been closed for months but the lights are on every night and it doesn't look like its going to be rented out. Seems odd that anyone could keep paying rent and electricity on a storefront when so many businesses cant keep their doors open.

Existentialist (&co) bookclub

Hey everyone!

I'm 29M and have been in Astoria for a little over a year. I have had on my mind starting an existentialist book club for a while now and was wondering if there was interest in the community.

The idea would be to mainly read classical existentialist fiction and closely related literature - thinking Camus, Sartre, Kafka, Clarice Lispector (including theatre/plays), open to suggestions.

I'd say slow paced given how busy everyone is, and to meet-up at a Cafe in Astoria once every 2 weeks.

If you'd be interested, comment or DM me
