Rainey park is always trashed

Okay, maybe not always trashed. But a lot of the times, especially after a day/night with warm weather, Rainey park has so much garbage and left over food lying around. Why can’t people be decent and take their trash home with them? Or at least tidy it all up. There are few employees to maintain the cleanliness. There needs to be more fining of people who litter. It’s such a nice park and the patrons are ruining it.

Pig Beach for the Knicks game tonight

Did anyone go on Tuesday? Was it a complete zoo where you can’t even get a table?

Last time we tried to go for a weekend Knicks playoff game the line wrapped around the block to get in but am curious if it’s the same on a week night.

Appreciate any insight!

Rooftop pool in Astoria or LIC?

Anyone know of a building or hotel locally with rooftop/outdoor pool for less than $100/day or similar? I’m pregnant and could really use some hydrotherapy for body pain before this baby comes. Happy to pay a guest fee to a resident, or if anyone knows of a hotel with a day pass option, that would be great too!

Too impatient to wait for garbage truck!

Totally cool to drive on the sidewalk, Black SUV, so you dont have to wait for the garbage truck to finish up! Unsurprisingly, the license plate lookup shows it would be forced to have a speed limiter because of all the violations in a one-year span.

Has anyone else noticed the condition of the fish tanks at Hero Thai-Izakaya?

I finally walked in tonight because I’ve been passing those tanks for a while and something about them kept bothering me. The water is extremely cloudy, the fish are massive for the tank size and they were all hovering near the top looking stressed. I asked staff about their care and got vague answers that honestly didn’t inspire confidence.

I know fish don’t trigger the same reaction in people that dogs or cats do but they are still living animals, not decor. Large koi/goldfish produce a huge amount of waste and need serious filtration and maintenance. Chronic poor water quality can literally poison them over time.

I’m not trying to start a witch hunt against the restaurant. I genuinely just want those fish properly cared for because the setup looked rough and it’s been sitting heavy with me since I left.

Does anyone know if there are local aquarium welfare groups, fish rescue people, or anyone in Astoria/Queens experienced with this kind of thing?

App that tracks which blocks you've walked

I've always wanted to walk every block of the city but knew the overhead of tracking those walks would be a pain, so over the last couple months I made an app that checks off each block once you've walked it. Some friends wanted to try it so I just uploaded it to the App Store.

It works for all 5 boroughs and you can turn on passive tracking so that your blocks are tracked without opening the app. There's also a leaderboard so you can see how your stats compare to other New Yorkers.

The app is called WalkNYC and it's completely free. It's only on iOS right now but I'm looking into porting it to Android. Would love any feedback you all have!

Here's the link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/walknyc-walk-every-block/id6758922428

Update: As of this evening it's actually ranked #79 in the Navigation category of the App Store!

Lights flickering or dimming by Ditmars Blvd near Astoria Park?

We're over by the Astoria Park on Ditmars Blvd and it's been a few days now where the lights dim or flicker. I know there was a transformer that went on fire by PS 122 but I think it's been fixed. I'm just wondering if anyone else is having similar issues with their lights.

Head’s up. It’s a day that ends in y so we know the deal. This is affecting Ditmars-bound trains too as our trains have nowhere to go.

Been stuck on a Ditmars-bound train for several minutes at QBP and then again at 39th.

Going out to eat

is it me or does it feel like there is nothing good to eat anymore on Ditmars. as someone who grew up here, I miss the old days of dining in Astoria. I am not a fan of outdoor dining, but it seems like everything has gotten way out of hand with the prices and you leave feeling hungry. can anyone relate?
