Room humidity

I moved to Purdue earlier this week from Vietnam for my PhD. The weather itself doesn't bother me much, but my lease agreement and various online sources keep saying that if I let the humidity go above 60%, there's a serious risk of mold developing on the walls, ceiling, etc.

However, I'm not a big fan of using the AC, not only because of the electricity consumption, but also because anything below 80F feels uncomfortable to me. The problem is that the humidity only stays around 60% if I set the AC to at least 70-72F. If I leave it at 80F, the humidity stays around 70-75%.

For those of you who live in the area, what's your experience been with mold? Do you actually keep your apartment below 60% humidity all the time?
