Made a mistake…

When my fiancé and I first brought our sweet boy home, he slept nearly the entire night through in his crate without issue. So we decided we’d immediately stick to it and crate him every night. He’d cry and eventually settle. EDIT: it was more or less mini panic attacks until he was exhausted. But after a LOT of Reddit threads, Google, and reflection on past experience with my late pup, I realized I was possibly setting him up for failure later in life.

I removed his crate from his playpen and have put it in storage (it’s a 42” size). I then purchased a more appropriately sized crate for him that we keep in the living room. I now work on tossing treats/toys into it, training exercises to teach him that quiet and calm behavior when he’s in the crate earns rewards, and just getting him comfy with going in and out of it.

He’s not quite to the level of comfort to willingly nap or lay down in it, but I do often catch him walking into it looking for treats. Going to keep at it with our fun games and training and cross my fingers that eventually it’ll all be worth it (,:

2014 435i - Oil Leak

Bought from auction back in December. Was hearing a bit of noise from what sounded like the tensioner pulley, opened the hood and found oil all over the belt and the top of the alternator. The oil filter cap is completely dry and shows no signs of leakage around the seal. While we troubleshoot, a new belt is already ordered and will be installed. The current one shows excess wear on the inner ribbing, not sure if it’s catching on something or breaking down from the oil.

Here’s full history since purchase:

I’ve reached my breaking point

In 2021, I adopted my cat Pip. I’d gotten her as a companion for my then 12 year old cat to try and bring some spring back in his step. And it worked, they got along well and it gave me nearly 4 more years with him before he went to sleep in 2024 just 5 days short of his 16th birthday. But I quickly realized something was wrong with Pip. What I had originally assumed were accidents being left by my senior dog with anxiety were actually instances of Pip peeing outside the litter box.

She has since been diagnosed with FIC, or feline idiopathic cystitis. It’s inflammation to the bladder caused by anxiety/stress in cats that can be incredibly painful, often leading to blood in the urine. Cats with this condition more often than not constantly pee outside the box. I have done everything we could possibly try…special prescribed urinary and stress formulated food, Feliway diffusers, pheromone collars, calming food additives, pain medications as needed during flare ups, an automatic litter box to keep her space clean at all times (in addition to two other regular boxes in our 2 bedroom apartment).

The latest flare up is now going on 3+ weeks. We’d left for the July holiday for 4 days and came home to her regular urine spots and found blood in the bathtub and near her litter box. She was immediately taken to the vet and prescribed medication for pain management and bladder spasm control. She’s shown no improvement. Her recheck labs and evaluation were more or less the same with the vet just saying ‘you’re doing everything right, it’s just a bad flare’.

Our apartment is destroyed. She’s soaked the underlayment beneath the vinyl planking. I am constantly on my hands and knees scrubbing at every square inch with enzyme cleaners to try and stop it. And today…? I discovered she’d started peeing on our couch.

I broke down and cried. I’ve done everything. I’ve spent thousands on medical bills and cleaners and food etc. I love this girl SO much, but I’ve reached my breaking point. And now I don’t know what to do. If a shelter/rescue were to take her (which is doubtful with her history and how full they are), she’d very likely be there for years in a cycle of constant stress and pain.

I could try and re-home her, but it’s unlikely anyone would be willing to take her on given the stress and expense of her condition. And finally, the last option is to put her to sleep myself when she’s surrounded by the people (and dog) that she loves. But my heart is breaking at thought of any of this.

Please…tell me what you’d do in this situation?
