Today, I hosted a dinner at my family’s cabin with a bunch of friends and their significant others (who we also include as friends, but we know them just a tad less)

My family’s cabin is really old: wood burning stove, outhouse, old icebox fridge being used as a cupboard. And as such, a few years ago we discovered a really really old tin board for Chinese checkers tucked behind some stuff. One that had some untasteful racial slur on them. Since the cabin is technically my grandmothers, we don’t get rid of anything in there without asking her first, and since no one even plays it, we forget it’s tucked away most of the time.

As dinner was finishing people were talking about playing a card game or something while the weather was still nice. I went to grab an old card game we keep up there (different, totally fine game, just very old)

As I was grabbing the cards I just wasn’t thinking and said ‘wanna see something fucked up?’ and grabbed the Chinese checkers board. Right as I showed it to people and they read the words I instantly realized ‘oh shit, I fucked up and did not think this through’. My friend is dating someone who is 1/2 Asian. I don’t know if they are Chinese at all, but still, doesn’t matter, not cool of me.

I don’t really know why I did it? Like, I find it a fascinating time capsule and an interesting glimpse into just how bad things could be. But still, not the time or place and I felt I had ruined the mood.

Luckily someone was able to salvage the conversation by saying it could be sold or turned into a cool shooting target if anyone had guns.

Now I am debating if I text an apology, mention an apology next time I see them, or just let it slide and hope they don’t think I’m a massive inconsiderate racist.

TL:DR showed my group of friends and old racist board for Chinese checkers totally not thinking about it when remembering one of my friends SO’s is 1/2 Asian
