Amateur artist trying to draw bgs (for the first time) How the hell am I supposed to shade the damn blanket?

This is so embarrassing it looks so funny 😭

[UPDATE] It wasn't fair to compare a completed art with a sketch last time

I also followed some of the critiques y'all gave me about the colours & cleanliness (I tried as best as I could)

Anyways I know the expression and posture still lacks in skills but this is the best I can do right now 😭

I'm aware of the fact that I still have a lot to learn so I'm not comparing my two drawings to say that "I'm good at art" but to show that I've improved!!! TT

I feel like I've improved in art because I feel more and more resonated with my recent artstyle which makes me happy because the past few years I hated the fact that all my drawings had this "cutesy" look to them TT

I take art as more of a hobby then anything so I don't have time to practice as much <3

My art feels flat and generic

I don't draw as often as I used to but I feel that I haven't improved much in my art OVERALL.

I can't draw the emotions I'm trying to convey, in the first picture I was trying to show something romantic with the white hair guy to have this yearning look 😭 and the last picture was supposed to have this awkward embarrassed expression but they always end up looking mild/ emotionless.

All of my drawings look very lifeless I think that the shading plays some role in this (?),but yeah every time I draw a character they always end up looking stiff and weird.

This is the best way I can describe what my art feels like to me so I hope you understand 😭
