Quality Fertilizer

This year I paid someone to do some lawn work, mainly to see what they did and when. The schedule includes fertilizing 4 times. Knowing that you have to be careful what to fertilize and when, I can only assume they are using a different fertilizer for each time of the year. I live in Ontario, Canada, so we have cold winters.

So here is what I came across online, and I don't know if it makes sense:

Early Spring / Starter Lawn Fertilizer | 16-32-6?

Early Summer / Lawn Fertilizer | 35-0-5?

Late Summer / Lawn Fertilizer | 24-4-10?

Fall / Lawn Fertilizer | 8-15-30?

Does that look like a good plan?

And where can you buy quality fertilizer for each season of the year? When you buy 'common grade' grass seed from a box store, it's not a good quality seed, so not sure if the same applies to fertilizer.

Thanks!

Dimmer Switches / Old Work Electrical Device Box in Canada

This electrical box situation is really starting to short-circuit my sanity.

I bought dimmer switches to install and they are too big to fit in the current device boxes. I've come to realize this is a common problem, that people need to replace their electrical device boxes for the same reason. Had to educate myself to understand the difference between 'new work' and 'old work' device boxes, so I now also understand that I need old work boxes so that I can easily install them on the existing drywall to minimize repair afterwards. There are also requirements electrical device boxes must comply with in the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and they must be CSA-certified.

I figured I'd pop into my local Home Depot and pickup old work device boxes big enough for my need and be off to the races. Nope! They appear to be very hard to buy here in Canada, or are not common enough for it to be a normal shelf item (I'm guessing). I can try to order what I need online from somewhere like Amazon, but being electrical (and me not an electrician), I don't want to install something that could be at risk or not to code.

So what are people doing to install a simple dimmer switch without having to do large patch repair?

The dimmer switches I bought are Lutron Diva LED+ (DVCL-153P) and they are in a very prominent area of our living room/kitchen, which is why I want to avoid the drywall work.

Long story short, I have no clue what device box to buy for this switch. I need 1 x 1 gang and 1 x 2 gang.

Firmware Update Failed / Brand New Dreame X60 Pro Ultra Max Complete

Hi all,

I am trying to setup the Dreame X60 Pro Ultra Max Complete. It's my first robot vacuum. It has a firmware update that it refuses to install and I've tried everything I can think of.

And every time I go into the vacuum, I'm blocked by the message below to update.

New firmware version is available.4.3.9_1495

Current version: 4.3.9_1124

Anyone have suggestions for how I can fix this? I've never contacted their support, and it sounds like that is bad also.

Buy now or wait until Prime Day? Dreame X60 Max Ultra Complete Robot Vacuum

I'm planning to buy the Dreame X60 Max Ultra Complete very soon. When I first looked a week ago, the price was $2,199.99. I checked this morning and it's now $1,999.99. With a Google search, I found a coupon that reduces it to $1,900.00.

I've never owned a robot vacuum but I do know this type of tech is the lowest price typically on Black Friday and secondarily on Prime Day. Does anyone know how much a high-ticket item like this is typically discounted? Do you think the price is likely to drop further as Prime Day approaches, or is it better to buy now?

P.S. Yes, I'm in Canada which is why the pricing is insane even with a discount.

Looking for High-Quality Certified Grass Seed in Canada (Not Box Store Seed)

I'm looking for a premium-quality grass seed supplier in Canada for a residential lawn. Ideally certified seed with known cultivars and germination rates, not the typical big-box store blends. I'm in Ontario and looking for recommendations for reputable suppliers, whether online or local. Primarily interested in Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass, or quality cool-season mixes for residential lawns.

Where do you buy your quality grass seed from?

Lawn Maintenance / Spring Plan... when to Fertilize?

Hello all. I live in Southern Ontario and my goal is beautiful, healthy, grass. Below is my spring lawn maintenance plan for next year. Next year because some work is already done and I'm a bit late. I also plan on doing something similar (scarify/seeding/fertilizing) in the fall to setup for next year.

I'm trying to decide the order to do things. Specifically if I should:

  • Fertilize with a spring fertilizer very early in the season to focus on existing established grass (point 2 below with the strikethrough) or
  • Whether I should seed first, then use a starter fertilizer 2 weeks later instead to give the new seed a better chance to grow (point 10).

Right now I'm leaning towards the steps below excluding point 2, and using the starter fertilizer instead.

  1. Cut, Dethatch / Early Spring (Mid-April)
  2. Fertilize? Early Spring (End-April to Early-May) / 2 Weeks Before Seeding / Thinking to avoid this given that it would focus on existing grass, not new seed
  3. Very Low Setting Grass Cut, Scarify / Early Spring (Early-May) / Exact date dependent on warm enough temperatures of consistent 10C+
  4. Topdress / Immediately Before Seeding (good to do, but I probably won't do this)
  5. Seed / Early Spring (Early-May) / immediately after low grass cut and scarify
  6. Roll / Immediately after seeding
  7. Water / Every day for 2 weeks after seeding / 4x Day for 5-10 minutes each
  8. Wait / 2-4 Weeks Before Cutting
  9. Cut
  10. Fertilize / Spring (Early-June to Mid-June) / 2 weeks after seeding. Starter Lawn Fertilizer to focus on new seed growth, not existing grass. NPK 16-32-6.

Thoughts? Open to any suggestions or changes.

Thanks!
