Making it in sound in 205 and 1

IATSE

I’m an sound designer and audio engineer located in Austin, Texas. I got my degree in this from Texas state university in 2022. I had to take a break though for a few year me and I recently got back into by working at the Zach theatre

I’ve gotten onto the local 205 referral hall but I was wondering how often the work comes in and if I should try working on getting my membership? I also wanted to ask if anyone knows if Austin is a good place to start off in or if I should move?

Along the same lines. I’ve been considering moving to NYC and was wondering what the process of going to the replacement room is like and is it reasonable to try and make it there or is it too hard / too much of a money investment. Could I hold a serving job or some other thing while I get started at the replacement room, and then when things become steady leave the serving world? I’m just nervous about moving to NYC without any form of income and basically relying on luck.

Thank you so much!

How do I break in

I’m an audio engineer and sound designer living in Austin, Texas and I’m having a lot of trouble breaking in. I got my degree from Texas state university in 2022 and after taking care of medical stuff I’ve been taking overhire work at the regional theatre, although it’s sparse at best.

I’m not sure where to go or what to do. I know Austin is too small of a market but I don’t have the money to blow to try and freelance in NYC, I’m going to try to take the apprenticeship test although I don’t think I’ll get it. I’m trying to cold call people but no one’s getting back to me, even theatre’s who reached out to me are ignoring me. I’ve submitted tons of resumes to regionals around the country and I haven’t even gotten an interview, same with trying corporate work. I got into the locals referral hall but haven’t gotten anything yet and the pay isn’t great from what I’ve heard. I feel like I’m trying and doing everything yet nothing is working. Am I just SOL or is there anything else I can do?
