Did anyone ever explain why Ugly John (John Orchard) disappeared from the show after the first season?

Was Orchard’s departure voluntary, or was his character simply written out for creative reasons?

Also, why would an Australian anesthesiologist be attached to an American unit? And why did he make an appearance as a different character, an MP named Muldoon, in the season 8 episode “Captains Outrageous”?

Season 3 is the best?

I hadn't even noticed Ray Wise turning up at the bar earlier in the season, before. Also, Maggie Phillips deserves such a round of applause. The music curation on the show is the real MVP.
