People who describe any decade that existed before they were born or when they were young children as “a simpler time”

As someone who lived through some of those decades, I assure you, they were not simpler times. They were just as difficult and challenging for those of us who lived through them as the current decade is for the current generation. We had different experiences, a different attitude and different culture, but nothing was simpler. (Try being on the spectrum long before anyone was testing for it.) And if you think the decade when you were young children was simpler, it’s because you were children. All you had to do was be children. The adults around you had plenty of adult responsibilities and went to bed worried quite a lot.

One additional thing: Those attractive, happy young women you see in old photos from the era of your mother or grandmother are very likely models in staged photos. Even when they weren’t models, the photos were staged, because unlike today, most people didn’t carry a camera around at all times; it was mainly professional or amateur photographers who did. These women in the photos didn’t represent all women and the photos didn’t necessarily represent a typical day in those women’s lives.

Titos Vandis in a bank commercial

Since “Private Charles Lamb” has just aired on METV, I was reminded of an old bank commercial with the wonderful Greek actor Titos Vandis, who played Colonel Andropolis in “Private Charles Lamb”. He played many fine roles in his career, and this commercial is just one in a series of humorous United California Bank commercials featuring a perky blonde actress who got everyone’s attention. Even though it’s a short commercial, I thought everyone might like it.

Yep, that’s Sandy Duncan early in her career.

Nabisco cookies

So let’s say a catastrophe has occurred and Nabisco announces that they are no longer going to make Oreo cookies. Everyone worldwide goes into a hoarding frenzy and you can no longer find Oreos of any kind on the store shelves anywhere. Other food companies follow suit and stop making their Oreo-knockoff sandwich cookies, and you can’t find those, either. What Nabisco cookies would you get as a replacement for Oreos?

I’m partial to Nutter Butter cookies myself.

Rainbow Bridge

I’m geographically challenged and have never visited Malibu Creek State Park. Does anyone know the location and name of the exact spot at the filming site that stands in for Rainbow Bridge, where the bus stops and the Americans and Chinese approach each other? Is this a spot that’s accessible to M*A*S*H fans visiting the area?

Why do many people start their own nonprofit, charity or foundation instead of supporting one that already exists?

I mean, how many “let’s beat cancer” or animal welfare organizations do we need?

Did anyone ever explain why Ugly John (John Orchard) disappeared from the show after the first season?

Was Orchard’s departure voluntary, or was his character simply written out for creative reasons?

Also, why would an Australian anesthesiologist be attached to an American unit? And why did he make an appearance as a different character, an MP named Muldoon, in the season 8 episode “Captains Outrageous”?

Apps that don’t offer any extra benefits over the website

What’s the point of giving us an app for your business when it doesn’t have any extra benefits that are missing from the website? When the app just duplicates what’s already there on your website, why should I install it? In fact, there are apps that don’t even HAVE some features of the website. Imagine my annoyance when I want to do something basic in an app, such as edit my account information, and all I get is a link to the website! Does the app exist just to collect our personal data? I’ve seen this with streaming apps, restaurant chains, retail chains and even a local medical practice. I’m not cluttering up my phone with their apps if there’s nothing extra I can get from them, sorry.

Merry Christmas in July! That time Alan Alda was a guest on The Carol Burnett Show

There was a thread on this previously posted here 6 years ago, but the link in that thread is broken now, so I thought I’d resubmit a thread about it with a working link. I remember watching this when it originally aired, on December 21, 1974, during M*A*S*H’s third season and The Carol Burnett Show’s 8th season. M*A*S*H took a holiday break between December 10 and December 31, so that’s when Alan was able to do this episode. There are other clips from this episode available on UTube, but this is my favorite.

“Colonel, I ask you, are these the buns of a warrior?”

You have to admit, that’s pretty funny.

From “Too Many Cooks”, season 8 premiere, with appearances from Ed Begley, Jr and John Randolph.

(Interestingly, Ed Begley would go on to play a doctor on “St. Elsewhere”.)

Please recommend me songs for this picture.

I love the theme song for the sitcom “Petticoat Junction”. This is an image from the closing credits. What other songs does this picture remind you of?

Simply scrolling through the cast lists can reveal some interesting things.

I just scrolled through the cast list for the first movie, and discovered for the first time:

Shirley MacLaine’s daughter Sachi Parker is credited as Bystander #1 and Buddy Ebsen’s daughter Kiki Ebsen is credited as Band Member, apparently for one of the auditioning bands. Her IMDb bio says she’s an accomplished jazz musician. Also, the dog playing Einstein was actually named O.J. (oof, that’s unfortunate), and the Peabody son’s first name is Sherman. I’m guessing that last bit is a nod to the “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” segments on the Rocky and Bullwinkle animated children’s program from the early 1960’s, in which a talking dog named Mr. Peabody and a boy named Sherman regularly travel through time using a time machine to visit historical events and meet historical figures.

SOS - Tasting History

Trying to negotiate with the ladies of the evening (or morning, or afternoon) for the schoolhouse in “Bug Out”, BJ offers them chipped beef, and Potter says, “Oh no, I love that after church on toast.” Clearly SOS was a bane, and probably a lifeline, to the soldiers in Korea as well.

Jack LaLanne in his first episode as your mom or grandma’s exercise teacher (and yours)

My mom used to exercise to Jack’s instructions for years, between doing her household chores. She remained slender her whole life and lived to be 91. Jack was a real inspiration to a lot of people, but especially women.

Need recommendations on vegetarian frozen meals that aren’t Amy’s Kitchen

Please no comments on how frozen meals aren’t good for me or too expensive and I should be eating better. I’m on the spectrum and not doing well currently and having a couple of frozen meals in my freezer helps me stay fed on the days when I can’t bring myself to assemble anything.

I’m used to buying only Amy’s frozen meals because they’re reliably vegetarian. I used to love them. But I’ve noticed that I’ve gradually begun to hate them. They suddenly don’t taste good anymore. I don’t know if they’ve changed or my tastes have changed or both. They’ve also become much more expensive, and I’ve actually thrown out some Amy’s meals that I used to love but suddenly make me gag. That’s a waste of money.

So I’m hoping that someone can recommend another brand that makes reliably good vegetarian frozen meals that I can try, just a couple that I can grab at the supermarket and keep in my freezer for awhile. Again, I don’t live off frozen meals, they’re just a lifeline on days when all I can do is shove something into the microwave.

Chaim Topol and Danny Kaye sing L’Chaim in Hebrew

In 1966, Israeli actor Chaim Topol made his stage debut as Tevye in the Israeli production of Fiddler on the Roof. This helped him land the role in the movie version after Zero Mostel, whplayed the role on Broadway, was passed over. That same year, he appeared on The Danny Kaye Show. Here the two of them sing L’Chaim in Hebrew, since Topol’s English wasn’t very good yet. (When he played the role on the London stage, he had to learn the English dialogue and song lyrics phonetically.)

I thought that their cheerful and upbeat performances might be a nice little pick me up for anyone who needs it.

Picture This

Father Mulcahy comes into the Swamp and tells Charles how unhappy Hawkeye is living alone and wants to move back.

Why would Hawkeye ask permission from Charles to move back into the Swamp? He’s in the Army and officially assigned to the Swamp. According to the Army, that’s where he’s supposed to be living. He just has to do it, not get down on his knees and grovel to be let back in, his pride notwithstanding, and Charles and BJ have no official say in the matter.

I know it would mess up the plot, but maybe it’s because the plot is a bit thin to begin with, and the absurdity of Hawkeye asking permission to move back is necessary to improve it.

Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks

Given how close their friendship was, did Carl Reiner ever try to get Mel Brooks to appear on The Dick Van Dyke Show in any role? Did Mel himself ever suggest it? (The character of Buddy Sorrell was actually based on Mel Brooks.)

Mel guesting on the show would have been EPIC.

What is the most popular and well-known charity in your country?

In the United States, it’s probably St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. It was founded by entertainer Danny Thomas (pictured) and opened its doors in 1962. Today it treats up to 9,000 children a year and does research into children’s cancer and other devastating diseases. The charity does a LOT of advertising and fundraising. It was named after the patron saint of hopeless causes.
