Crelan launches Wero

With many Belgians now choosing their banking app to make payments, Crelan is integrating Wero into its digital service.

The popularity of digital payments is growing fast among Belgian consumers. Today, to respond to this transition, Crelan will step ahead by integrating Wero technology into its mobile app. While customers could already use QR codes to complete certain payments, they will now have direct access to Wero features through Crelan Mobile. With these, they can make payments to individuals, generate personal QR codes for a payment request, and make online purchases. Thanks to this integration, they enjoy a smoother payment experience in line with a future European standard for digital payments.

Banking apps are gaining ground among consumers

According to The Future of Payments 2026 – Consumer Perspectives study, conducted by Profacts between 15 January and 4 February 2026 among 1,505 Belgian consumers, banking apps are today’s preferred method of payment for transactions between friends and family.

The study also shows that security, ease of use, and protection of privacy remain the main criteria for choosing a payment method. Plus, payments by QR code are among the most popular features within banking apps.

These results mark a clear trend: consumers favour payment solutions that are simple, secure, and integrated within their usual banking environment.

Wero now directly integrated in the Crelan app

In order to offer its customers an efficient and user-friendly payment experience, Crelan is integrating Wero features directly within the Crelan Mobile app. Wero is a European payment solution developed as part of the European Payments Initiative (EPI), which facilitates the making of easy, fast, and secure payments directly between bank accounts.

From now on, customers can send and receive money using QR codes and payment links from the Crelan app, without needing to download or install an additional app. Thanks to this integration, the entire user experience remains in Crelan’s familiar digital environment, with the same simplicity, security, and user convenience that customers are used to. Wero also aims to become a European benchmark in digital payments.

Wero’s integration within Crelan will grow

Crelan will continue the progressive integration of Wero within its mobile app. Other Wero features will therefore be added step by step to enhance the bank’s digital solutions.

This means that customers will be able to benefit from new payment opportunities directly through Crelan’s digital channels.

Crelan will naturally communicate such developments and new integrations once they are available to customers.

>

Christian Steeno

Director Commercial Policy & Market Strategy

Vigilance against fraud attempts

Crelan would like to take this opportunity to remind customers that they will never receive a request asking them to install an additional app or to communicate personal details or banking information as part of these new features.

As with any innovation in technology, the bank asks its customers to be alert to potential phishing attempts. In case of any doubt, Crelan recommends using only the bank’s official communication channels.

EPI Company | bunq launches Belgian IBANs

Bunq, Europe’s second-largest neobank, today announced the introduction of Belgian IBANs. With this, the challenger now offers simple, fast access to local accounts for the country's significant and growing population of expats and internationally-mobile workers.

As the political heart of Europe, Belgium is home to a dynamic and mobile population who have been long underserved by traditional banking. With 36% of the population having a foreign background, there is a clear demand for a flexible, borderless banking solution simplifying life across countries.

With a fully digital experience that allows users to open an account in just five minutes, bunq users can now skip the financial admin that comes with an international move - holding their Belgian account alongside up to 25 separate bunq accounts, each with its own individual IBAN, giving them the flexibility to spend, save, and pay without paperwork or branch visits.

Building for the future shouldn't be reserved for those who stay in one place. With bunq Savings, users earn a variable gross interest rate of up to 3.01% annually, paid out weekly rather than once a year. The rate is tiered: a base rate applies up to each user's personal threshold, with a higher bonus rate above it, interest paid on balances up to €100,000 per person. The rate is variable and can change over time. Interest is subject to 30% Belgian withholding tax, and, as with any savings, credit and inflation risk apply. bunq also offers automatic round-ups from everyday spending, making saving even more effortless. Deposits up to €100,000 are protected by the Dutch Deposit Guarantee Scheme.

>

Ali Niknam

Founder and CEO of bunq

Alongside the introduction of local IBANs, bunq today releases Wero, the secure payment system from the European Payments Initiative, in Belgium and France. This gives users another way to pay and get paid effortlessly, directly from their bunq app. Wero will be rolled-out to more participating European markets in the coming months, unlocking cross-border payments throughout Europe. These updates continue bunq's rapid growth driven by making life easy for its users, following the recent launch of Italian bunq IBANs and filing of its Mexican banking license.

About bunq

bunq, Europe’s second-largest neobank, has built the first user-centric bank. By developing a product rooted in its users’ wants and needs, bunq makes life easy for location-independent people and businesses, starting from the way they manage money: how they spend, save, budget and invest. As the world’s first GenAI-powered bank, bunq offers its users safe, secure and simple 24/7 financial support—user-centricity at scale.

Pioneering many things considered impossible, bunq was the first bank to get a greenfield European banking permit in over 35 years, raised the largest series A round ever secured by a European fintech (€193 million), and was the first EU neobank to achieve structural profitability. As part of its mission to build the first global neobank, bunq has also received its US broker-dealer license and applied for its US and Mexican banking license, with more global expansion to follow. This makes Decathlon one of the first major partners in German retail to offer this system. Within the international Decathlon Group, the German market is taking a pioneering role in the rollout.

Successful first phase marks major next steps in iDEAL…

Amsterdam, 16 July 2026 – Following the successful first step of the iDEAL to Wero migration, the European Payments Initiative (EPI), Dutch banks – including ABN Amro, ING, Rabobank - and Dutch Payment Service Providers - including Adyen, Buckaroo, CM.com, Mollie, Online Payment Platform, Pay.nl and PPRO- have jointly agreed on the roadmap for the next major phase of the transition to Wero. Building on the positive results achieved since the introduction of the iDEAL | Wero co-branding earlier this year, this next phase will be delivered through close collaboration across the payments ecosystem – including associations such as Thuiswinkel.org, eCommerce Europe and Payments Association - ensuring a predictable and carefully managed migration for all parties involved.

A growing number of transactions, both C2C and e-Commerce, are already processed through Wero’s platform, confirming that the new infrastructure is operating smoothly, providing the same seamless experience that consumers know from iDEAL, while progressively expanding the reach and scope of Wero. This enables merchants and payment service providers to continue the migration without compromising the payment experience consumers expect from iDEAL, while paving the way for the next phase of implementation.
In October 2026, all Dutch issuing banks will be connected to Wero and ready for the next phase of the migration. From that point onwards, iDEAL payments will gradually transition to the Wero infrastructure. For consumers, the online payment experience will remain largely unchanged, as they will continue to pay through their own bank. Behind the scenes, however, the European payments infrastructure will continue to expand, strengthening Europe's sovereignty in digital payments.
Over the past few weeks, EPI, Dutch banks and payment service providers have worked together to finalize the operational framework for this next phase. As the migration progresses, EPI will broaden this collaborative approach by engaging with consumer organizations and merchant associations to support the introduction of the next generation of Wero functionalities - including Purchase Protection - and ensure that the implementation of the next phase delivers value for consumers, businesses and across the European payments landscape.
Dutch banks and Payment Service Providers will collectively introduce Purchase Protection, with the objective of achieving full coverage by 1 January of 2028. This phased implementation gives the ecosystem the necessary time to implement the required operational processes in a controlled and predictable manner.

By regaining control of our payments, Europe can safeguard its wealth and flexibility

At a time when global geopolitics is reshaping our economy, Europe faces a crucial question: do we have the right tools to regain control of our payments?

Despite national champions like CB in France, payments in many European countries remain largely dependent on solutions and infrastructure controlled by international players. With Wero, we are promoting an alternative finally conceived at the European level.
