Skill issue help needed

This video is deceptive as it took me a stupid amount of attempts at this encounter to get through it without healing items lol. I also haven’t got past the damn gargoyles. I kill these dudes then the dogs just fine now, but still inevitably get killed by the stupid gargoyles. I suck at this game.

Jumped in on Mentor and shit is intense. I’m pretty determined to figure it out but overall I’m getting annihilated. One mistake and it’s one shot grab, exploding from 20 different directions, fire shuriken, rockets, stunlocked by machine guns, comboed to death, etc.

  1. I don’t get how to use essence for UTs in this game. It either absorbs before I can do it or I just get hit out of trying to charge it. Like after an OT what is the best way to use a UT if I want to do that?
  2. How tf does the targeting work? I can attack who I actually want to attack like 20% of the time. This is especially an issue for guillotine throws for me I can barely ever throw who I want to throw.
  3. The entire > S S strings for sword seem utterly useless unless I’m fighting like one or two dudes because I inevitably get hit by something during the initial forward roll. Am I missing something?
  4. I have zero consistency. It basically feels like RNG whether I’ll get through an encounter cleanly or get instantly wrecked.
  5. Any good guides, videos, etc. that’ll help me not suck?

Thx

EDIT: Thanks to tips in this thread I just burned through the rest of chapter 3 barely dying. Thanks!

What are some fun/useful tips I should know as new player + major noob questions

I’m a couple missions past Lu Bu at this point but have just been winging it and probably missing out on some things. The combat is pretty straightforward coming from Nioh and Rise of the Ronin but there’s still some really cool combo potential with magic etc. Plus the animations are awesome and the combat is fast and satisfying.

  1. Can you change martial arts on a weapon or just the inputs? I’ve just been grabbing random shit and swapping constantly trying out different martial arts but it would be cool to be able to equip the skills I like on a particular weapon type.

  2. How does the tempering/embedding work in this game? Builds?

  3. Do the RPG systems even matter in NG at all or is it like Nioh where you just equip random shit and go with it until NG+?

  4. Any benefits to going back to the village periodically? Like I think I missed the backyard key to the lady’s house but it seems like you can do everything you need to from the shrine basically.

  5. Do stats actually matter or is that like Nioh too? I have the first three pretty even around 15 then metal and water around 5. Is even everything better to get more spells?

  6. Anything else? Advanced combat tips/tech? Basically have just been parrying and spamming random martial arts and magic lol and that’s been pretty effective but I’d like to be able to do some cooler stuff.

This game is cool but I have no idea wtf I’m doing

I have over 1000 hours in Nioh 2 and 300ish in Nioh 1 and just picked up RoR yesterday on PS+. Combat is a lot of fun but I only have two styles unlocked for katana and greatsword so far I think. I get the panic system thing from reading another post but do not really understand the combat flow yet other than just learn parry timings, spam martial arts, repeat.

I’m not very good at parrying so it takes me a while to learn timings then once I do it kinda feels like tap triangle to win vs. the creative improv of Nioh or Ninja Gaiden, etc. but I know that’s cause I just suck and have seen some insane combat showcases from people like LasttoLoad and others. How do I git gud? I’m never going to be some high score dojo master but would like to at least be able to get into a flow and improvise and do cool shit.

Are you supposed to switch styles during attack animations kinda like preshifting in Nioh? What’s the best way to choose and chain martial arts? Any helpful tech stuff like animation cancelling, etc.? Other combat tips? I’ll probably find some YT tutorials but figured I’d ask here.

Nioh 1 is a phenomenal game. Don’t skip it.

Just finished the last DLC mission last night (Everlasting Duty what in the actual fuck). Nioh 1 is peak and a much better game than Nioh 3 IMO. I started with Nioh 2 based on reddit advice like I’m sure a lot of others did too and just got around to Nioh. Wish I’d ignored that advice lol it’s so good. Base game is also free on PS+ currently.

Can I skip Way of the Strong and go straight to Queen’s Eyes and Demon? Will I get annihilated? I never felt underleveled in the DLC but part of that could be a lot of hours experience in Nioh 2. I also soul matched my gear occasionally though which I never had to do in 2. I think my gear is all +5 with +6 weapons. Used Red Demon.

The duo boss fights however are the epitome of bullshit. I’m not a pro by any stretch but know how to play and can handle any single boss no problem. Two at the same time though is just unfair. The only way I was able to do it is with a full stock of quick change, protection, power pills and rejuvenation talismans combined with hit and run spam tactics while chugging elixirs like an alcoholic. Is there a better way? Lol I just had to embrace the cheese. Everlasting Duty and the Nobunaga + Obsidian Samurai fight that comes after a revenant gank gauntlet were easily the worst.

Also how the hell are you supposed to use Living Weapon? Do you need to build for it? I used it a few times as a finisher but most of the time I tried it I’d get hit out of it in one shot and instantly die.

Nioh 1 duo boss fights

What. The. Fuck. I finished the story and unlocked divines and every new side mission that unlocked is gank fest hell.

I know this is a thing lol and I played 1k+ hours of Nioh 2 so I don’t totally suck but good lord. I’m getting one shot from off screen like it’s my job. Cleared three of them last night and probably died more than I did in the previous three regions combined. Kinda getting the hang of it but man I did not expect to have to lock in this much in NG.

Best IMDB review I’ve ever read. Hamburger Hill - 1987

Super random but I finally got around to watching Hamburger Hill and was blown away. I was so mesmerized I bought the brilliant book by Samuel Zaffiri and read it cover to cover the next day. I stumbled on this IMDB review from a Vietnam Vet and thought I’d share:

“This is an excellent depiction of the insanity that was the war in Viet Nam. My view as a naval officer during a scenic tour of the Mekong near the Cambodian border and the Vietnamese city of Chau Phu, permitted me to be a witness to many, many occasions involving the wholesale abuse of humans by humans. The strain on mind, body and soul takes years (if ever) to repair and this film captures it. There are brief glimpses of this agony in some of the other films mentioned here in the reviews, e.g., Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket and Platoon. Each of these films have merit but are deeply flawed. Apocalypse Now is steeped in moral allegory to the expense of an accurate portrayal of the war; Full Metal Jacket is only 2/3 completed; Platoon becomes a Levi-Straussian moral tale with an arch villain and virtuous hero-- the latter heinously slain by the former with revenge exacted by the weary sojourner on the odyssey. OK. What do we have here with Hamburger Hill? A story? Heroic acts? Action? Not really. What we have is the horror and insanity of war. The film ends on the same pointless note as it began. But, you know what? Reading through the detractors of this film who touted the other potential three and slammed this one, I would not hesitate to bet they were never there. I could glance at the reviews and pick out the vets-- not just on the basis of whether they liked this film or not but of how they reacted to it. I know and know damn well. I too was there, brothers. See this film. It's well produced, directed and the cast is damn good. Check it out.”
