Ok, so I love music but know very little about most instruments. I hope this question is ok to post here, I tried eli5 but couldn’t. Obvi one of my favorite band and musicians are Tool. And I’m hoping the explanation can use Adam and Justin as examples.

So there are different types of guitars and one is the bass. How do you differentiate the difference in sound between them? Does the bass usually hold the rhythm line? How can you tell which one is playing which part?
Btw, embarrassing to ask but I’m hoping someone can help a useful idiot out.
