Son's great-uncle wants to publish book with racist content in my son's name (not a joke)
He's not a bad man, or a white supremacist but he's from a small town and is over 80. He and my son (age 10) were spitballing ideas for a kids book and he came up with an idea. Uncle went off and wrote up some stories. When we saw the manuscript there was a gratuitous reference to a black African character being into witchcraft, how black his skin was, physical features, etc.
Now wants to publish it, as a collaboration but it will be credited on the cover as my son's full name and the uncle's nickname, so attributable to my son and not the uncle, even though my son didn't come up with the idea of the African character and how he is described!
My son is so excited about getting a book published but my wife and I both agree that it absolutely needs to be edited - my son has even talked about gifting copies to non-white friends! My wife (whose uncle this is), has said she doesn't know how to approach the subject of editing out the racist content. She's nervous to approach him about it but so am I, because he's not my relative. I recognize something must be done though!
Thoughts? This must be a first!
