Does the 1.4 engine have the same water pump failure problem?

Hey guys,

I am in the market for a Golf, GTI/GTE or the 150 hp engine, however I've read about the random and unpredictable failure of the water pump due to its bad design. And while changing a water pump after 100,000 km or 10 years is perfectly normal for most cars, there are so many bad stories of early failure or people who even change it multiple times.

So I might consider the 1.4 hybrid engine in the GTE or the eTSI. Do you guys know if these are less prone to water pump issue?

TIA!

Is water pump failure inevitable in 1.5 and 2.0 turbo engines?

Hi everyone,

I am considering buying a Golf or Polo in either GTI or R-line version with 1.5 or 2.0 turbo engines.

I was quite confident in my choice but now I am seeing a lot of people on VW and GTI forums that had to change their water pump and it seems almost inevitable but also quite random.

Can someone comment on this? What's the failure rate or is there a way to reduce the risk of this? I am now scared of buying a VW.
