Metro security/LAPD just pulled a drug user off the A Line at Union Station

Lots of police/security on Metro tonight in DTLA. This guy was completely out of it on A Line northbound and repeatedly trying to light up a joint. Metro security got on at Broadway and stopped him, then when the train was stopped at LAUS, I guess they talked and LAPD pulled him off the train.

Video: The guy walking down the stairs. I waved at the cops.

There were two groups of LAPD officers at both ends of the platform at Pico when I arrived. Not sure what is going on, but felt extra safe tonight making my transfer. Maybe the extra police was trying to prevent more incidents like this morning?

Why is the E Line like this

3 pm. Just missed previous train by a hair and next one was 20 minutes away. Now the train is packed and we're really late.

How to visualize particulate airflow in house

We are siting a whole house fan for a 1-story house. Other than the obvious purpose (to cool down the house in the evening), we also do a lot of cooking and the fume hood is less than effective, so there are a lot of smells around the house. Curiously, the smells don't seem to collect much in the kitchen but all the way in the other side of the house where the living room is.

Is there a way to visualize this air movement via some sort of smoke or particulate emission, and is there something that won't set off the smoke detectors during testing?

Another exciting night on Metro

Against my better judgment, I decided to take my bike instead of car last night to Culver City and no good deed goes unpunished.

At Culver City around 9:30p, I walked onto the E-Line and right into a crazy fight between a woman and a couple. The woman was yelling at the top of her lungs for at least 3-4 stops before security showed up (yay!). The N-word, F-word, and B-word was recited between 300 and 500 times. The woman told security that it was because someone "bumped her hair" and refused to apologize. The couple was also very loud in retorting.

The agonizing part is that security escorted neither party off the train. I would think any disturbance would be at least grounds for removal and they did nothing except allow the insults to continue. Eventually the couple stepped off the train and the woman left a few stops later. It did not come to blows, but I was stuck in an awkward position, having no other place to put my bike in a fairly crowded vehicle. This is one of my least favorite scenarios - that I would be carrying something like a bike and have nowhere to retreat from crazy people.

The adventure continued and the E-Line train had to reverse from the Washington wye because some idiot drove onto the tracks. The J was detoured because of street closures on Figueroa so I had to ride my bike to 7th/Metro. While waiting (quite awhile) for the bus, some guy having a crashout repeatedly confronted LAPD officers at the entrance to the subway, yelling racial epithets. This is on the street and it wasn't technically Metro's fault, but the J Line stop was only feet away and the guy was running around in a frenzy.

The final adventure was that at El Monte Station, both the escalator and elevator to street level were out of service. I was fine to carry my bike up the stairs but there was an older guy who was upset because he had a heavy electric bike.

Was I threatened directly or attacked? No. But did I feel unsafe? Absolutely, for a sizable portion of this trip. This is the thing about safety that don't make it into crime statistics but any rider would acknowledge is unsafe. Nowhere else in the world would they tolerate this but even security is so afraid of aggressive riders that no action is taken. I don't think we need new rules. I just wish we'd enforce the existing code of conduct.

Why do some train operators drive like maniacs?

I've noticed this on LRT occasionally but last night was really bad. The train was doing a lot of hard starts and stops. Twice I heard the cars go "thunk" when the braking is so hard that either the cars were slamming against one another or some wheels were slipping.

Even on long stretches between the stations there seems to be no reason for the sudden speed changes. For example, the train would begin to slow down as we got close to the station and then suddenly accelerate again before pulling in. There's just a lot of random speed changes that gives passengers something to think about. Is there some sort of signaling issue where there is a train ahead?

Sometimes I travel with my bike and I am on my feet holding the bike, and I never know what to expect with the train. Any operators here that could give some insight?

The safest place in LA at midnight

7th/Metro crawling with cops and security at midnight. I imagine it's because of the World Cup, but everyone is so well behaved 😊

J Line is neglected by security and is filled with crazies

I hadn't been on the J Line in awhile and yesterday rode it to/from DTLA. I've noticed that this bus has gotten rather dirty and unpleasant because there are a lot of street stops in downtown and the fare is never enforced.

Obviously I can only speak from experience. Yesterday a crazy homeless got on the bus during the afternoon commute, went to the back and screamed obscenities the entire trip to El Monte. He was banging on the walls and making a lot of noise and because the seats are all arranged to face forward, no one can see what he was actually doing but also couldn't see whether he was about to hit anyone. The Transit Watch app didn't work and there was no way to report the disturbance. There were no green shirts on the bus, but there was a ton of them at El Monte standing around not doing much.

Add this to a plethora of unpleasant encounters. This bus is basically the new overnight homeless shelter as the route is long and is 24/7. People of all sorts get on this bus, with large bags, large dirty dogs, recyclables, etc. There's no upside to riding it at night but I thought during the day it would be better and it wasn't, even when the bus is filled with commuters. The bus has long running freeway segments, which means you could be boxed in with dangerous people for 10-15 minutes at a time.

The problem is that all the security seems to have been diverted to the new lines to put on a good face for Metro, but this workhorse line is completely neglected. The bus yesterday even had a "ride free today!" message on the TAP reader for no reason which means not even the fare could be enforced. There are a lot of buses at peak frequency, which means the zombies could just pick and choose which bus doesn't have green shirts and throw their tantrum there. They all know this even if they appear crazy, at some low level they know that they know to avoid the cops and ambassadors.

Who do I contact about this? Unfortunately I couldn't wait to get off the bus yesterday so didn't get a vehicle number, but I feel like this can be brought up at a service council meeting or somewhere else appropriate.

EDIT: It appears that the "ride free today" message was due to me hitting the fare cap. I haven't had this happen before, the long delays on the E yesterday apparently caused me to miss the 2-hour transfer window. But the point still stands that few people actually pay.

Most Poniatowskiego Construction

Hello, does anyone know the details about the ongoing construction on the bridge and when they might be finished? I started coming to Wawa 4 years ago and I seem to recall that this bridge was already being worked on. They closed the tram stop last year and now they're redoing the tracks entirely. I'll be back again in the fall and I love the Powisle area but I may have to look at staying elsewhere if they're still not done. Thanks for any info.
