Fatal Crash Closes Freeway Lanes in Berkeley

I was running on the Bay Trail when all of a sudden I noticed all these cars and police and a semi pulled over on the highway. Then I saw the pickup truck absolutely demolished at the back of the semi truck. Very sad story, please PLEASE everyone be safe on the roads.

Itinerary Planning Help for Skardu

Hi all, I am an American planning a visit to Pakistan to see friends from 28 August - 12 September. I have friends in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. I also want to spend at least 3 days in Skardu. I need to be in Islamabad at the end of my trip for a 3am flight back to the U.S. on 12 September.

I was originally planning to do Skardu from 2-6 September, but now my friend from Lahore is asking that I visit him during the weekend (4-6 Sept) so that he can show me around. That would push Skardu to 6-10 September.

I've also read that flights to/from Skardu can be cancelled/delayed due to unpredictable weather.

Am I okay to plan to return from Skardu on 10 September if my flight to the U.S. is at 3am on the 12th? Or should I do the Skardu trip during the weekend and visit Lahore towards the end of my trip instead?

Thanks for the advice!

Accidentally illegally installed internet in apartment; advice needed

Hi everyone,

4 days into apartment living and I already did something illegal 😢 This was completely my fault, but I'm looking for advice on the best way (or what you would do) to proceed.

I've never lived by myself before or had to set up utilities by myself. I had to set up internet, and I know nothing about it. Apparently my apartment was already set up for Xfinity, but I didn't realize (this shows how little I know about internet and utilities). I researched and decided to use Sonic, and just had them install it in my apartment. I reread the lease and it says I can't drill into the walls or install cables (both of which the Sonic technician did).

Now that I've already done it, what would you recommend I do? Should I tell the rental management company ASAP? Wait until I move out, and eat the cost they will deduct from the security deposit (or will they take the entire thing?) Get it uninstalled before I move out (if that's even a thing?)

I feel really dumb and bad for doing this so ignorantly, so any helpful suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

After the interview: Good signs or nothing out of the ordinary?

Last week I had an interview for a Disaster Recovery Specialist position with HCD. This week, I receive an email from the hiring manager saying that they would like to proceed with my application and if I could provide 2-3 references ASAP, and that they would be able to answer any questions I had at this time. The following day, I get an email from HR saying that I didn't take the exam to prove my eligibility, and that I should take it ASAP and let them know when I've taken it.

I know nothing is final until a TJO/FJO, but would you take these to be signs that they selected me? Or is it equally as likely they might be preparing me as a backup choice if their first choice declines? Thank you! I've worked in the federal government before but this is my first CA State job process so it's all very new to me.

Half of this Ethiopian Veggie Plate?

Sorry, I didn’t do a good job of showing size or scale, but I ate half of this veggie plate (not including the injera on the bottom). Any ideas or estimates?

East Bay Question: Studio in Kensington or Group House in South Berkeley?

Hi everyone, I have an East Bay-specific question. I am 29F and have been living in a group house in South Berkeley for the past year with three lovely housemates. My room is the smallest, and we share a single bathroom, although the house itself is pretty spacious. My housemates are lovely and have really made the house feel like a home. The location is unbeatable as well. 3 minutes to Berkeley Bowl, 8 minutes to the Ashby BART, I can walk/jog to the Berkeley YMCA, 20 minutes to Trader Joe's, etc. I pay $1.2k/month not including utilities.

At the same time... I've been wanting to live alone for years now, but haven't been able to due a handful of factors. I've started to look at studios/ADUs again, and found an ADU in Kensington. It's on a dead end street and generally a very different vibe from South Berkeley. It's a 10ish min walk from the strip of shops on Arlington Ave, but anywhere else I'd have to walk down the hill (or drive, I have a car). I'd have my own private patio area too, and the studio feels decently spacious. It's $1,675/month including utilities.

I have a car and work primarily remote, so the biggest factor in my decision has been the location tradeoff and if it's worth finally being able to live by myself. I'm not a big city person; I toured some places near Lake Merritt too and found that I preferred more peace and quiet (but not necessarily the level of peace and quiet in Kensington). However, I do like being able to easily get into Oakland or SF via the Ashby BART like I can do at my current location.

I'm wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation, facing the tradeoff between convenience and living by themselves, and has any insight to offer. Or any perspective about living in Kensington! Thank you.

ETA: I am pretty introverted so being "social" to me is going to coffee shops, libraries, hiking, running, sitting by Lake Merritt, etc. I'm not into any sort of nightlife/party scene.
