I slept in my day & nights for 16 years before a doc told me that was bad
Just had my annual appt and saw a new optometrist this time. I’ve been wearing Air Optic Day & Nights since I was prescribed contacts at 18.
I showered in them and slept 7nights at a time with them in. I will say I’m very clean ocd so I always washed thoroughly when handling my lenses and put drops/lubricant in every day.
My new doc was horrified by this and couldn’t believe I had been sleeping in them. I told him that I’ve seen a doc every year for the last 16 years and NONE of them ever brought this up as an issue. I’m always honest and transparent with my docs about how I use my contacts bc I want to keep my eyes healthy. He said “starting today, I don’t want you to ever sleep in contacts again. Ever.”
Needless to say I was really shocked at how bad this is for my eyes (already showing signs of corneal neovascularatjon) like it could end up causing glaucoma or damage that would require a cornea replacement surgery…..
I am so extremely disappointed that no one ever told me otherwise, I was just using them how docs had always told me was fine. You don’t know what you don’t know.
I’m prescribed dailies now and making the transition. it will be a tough routine to crack but I like being able to see, so would really like to keep that going.
Maybe someone else in a similar position will read this and it will be helpful.
Thanks for reading my vent
If anyone has tips or advice for the switch from monthly to daily, I’d love to hear it!!
