PSA: Your specific type of contact lens is not an exception to the "no water" rule.

Just a quick PSA for anyone who needs to hear it today: Never expose your contact lenses to water of any kind. It is a blanket rule for every single type of lens on the market. Whether you wear hard lenses, soft lenses, daily disposables, extended wear, or even specialty lenses like sclerals, water is always off-limits. If you're hopping in the shower, going for a swim, or just washing your face, take them out first. It's not worth the risk.

When eye doctors say "never expose your lenses to water," people usually think of lakes or swimming pools. But water exposure happens in a lot of stealthy ways.

All of the following are unsafe for all lens types:

  • Showering or washing your face while wearing them
  • Rinsing your lenses or lens case in the bathroom sink
  • Handling your lenses with hands that are still damp from washing them
  • Wearing them in hot tubs or saunas

If it comes out of a tap, a pipe, or nature, keep it away from your lenses!

Can it be reused?

I got a few trial contact lenses, since I'm going to start using them daily. They gave me about 5, and they say they're for daily use. Are they only for single use? Or could I use them twice?Which ones should I buy if I want some to use every day?

RGP Contact glare and pressure

So I got my RGP contacts about 2 months ago. They had me wear them for a couple weeks but they have glare really bad around the edges all the time. I'm now on my third pair the biggest size they can give me apparently and the glare is still not all the way gone granted a lot better than the first pair. They are also still irritating alot of the time so I ordered some dry eye supplies in hopes that will help the irritation issue. I also feel like I can feel the pressure of them on my eyes idk if that's normal. My eye dr says they fit great every time she looks at them but I don't think shes fitted many rgps. Idk the glare im getting doesn't seem right and my eye Dr is acting like shes never heard of it before. Like I can literally see the edges of my rgps in my eyes and the lights glare real bad around the edges. Does anyone know if this is normal or what's going on?? I want to like my RGPs so bad everything's so crystal clear in the middle. The glare and uncomfort is just driving me mad. I've been told I have huge pupils so idk maybe that's my issue lmao.

Contact lens solution usability

So I have contact lens solution that’s has expired a couple of years ago. I’m wondering if it’s still safe to use. I have many of these; they’ve never been opened and have been stored in a cool environment. I would assume it should be fine but it’s better to err on the side of caution.

Reusing daily contact lenses

Hi everyone!! I just started wearing contact lenses and my optometrist recommended daily disposables (especially since I don't plan on wearing them every day). However, he told me that I could use these lenses for two consecutive days. Meaning, if I only wear them for part of the day, I can store them (he gave me a little case with that contact lens solution whose name I can't remember) and put them on again the next day. (But he specified it should only be for two consecutive days)

Even though it was a specialist who told me this, I'm still anxious because I'm terrified of getting an eye infection or damaging my eyes by reusing daily contacts like this, even if it's just for two days. Can anyone tell me if there's any danger in doing this? Does anyone else do the same thing, or something similar?

I won’t be using 1800-Contacts again, but how did this even happen?

Early June I went online to the site with my downloaded prescription from my eye Dr. office. I logged in and fed the 1800-Contacts site the new script. I got a message saying they had to check it with my eye Dr.

The prescription had changed. Previously I had been 4.0 in both eyes and was now 4.5 in the left eye, but still 4.0 in the right eye. About a day later I get a message saying my prescription is verified and I can place my order. So, I go in and place my order for two boxes of each eye.

They send me four boxes of 4.5.

So, I logged in today and I can’t find any evidence of my current prescription. The most recent prescription I can see that they have in file is from 2022, back when I was 4.0 in both eyes.

So I get on the chat and they try to tell me that they went off my most recent prescription, which was still valid. Which if they did they would have sent me four 4.0, not four 4.5. Also, last I checked my 2022 prescription would not still be valid as of 2026. Then they said their warehouse just made a mistake.

They are going to expedite my correct contacts to me and I have to use an emailed label to send back the wrong stuff. Frankly, I’m not even sure what all they are sending me except that there will be 4.0 in there and I’ll just keep two of the 4.5 for my left eye.

For anyone looking to use them, they are not being careful and you may find the lower price comes with extra hassle. I know, first world problems, but I wasn’t planning on going out all 4th of July weekend in my bedtime glasses.

Graduating to Sclerals

So I’m getting my Scleral lenses next week. Already had my fitting. It’s the first big lens change I’ve made in 25-26 years and I would love for it to go well. I have Keratoconus and started with Soft Perms in the ‘90s, then was switched to Rose Ks in the late ‘90s, and then those Rose Ks were eventually piggybacked over Acuvues when the RGPs started causing too much dryness on their own. My current doctor told me that most Rose K patients have moved on to Sclerals and so I knew I needed to make the move as well, as my current lens combo still has a bit of that dryness/instability issue.

As many here know, the Sclerals are not cheap, so I borrowed the money from a relative (I had heard about VSP and EyeMed, and I have general Blue Shield insurance, but Blue Shield once told me they weren’t going to cover this).

I got a pang of anxiety the other night when I realized that I basically just bought the equivalent of a Les Paul guitar. The idea of handling a contact lens worth that much money is new to me (and my optometrist informed me that most of her patients pay in cash).

Any thoughts, advice or perspectives on wearing and handling from current Scleral wearers?

Are total 30 lenses actually that bad compared to air optix ones...?

I used to wear air optix but stopped after a few years because they were so uncomfortable for me. I decided to start wearing contacts again a few years after I stopped and my optometrist prescribed me total 30 instead. It's my first day wearing them and I bought a 12 month supply at the clinic since I usually just buy my contacts right after my eye appointment. So far I like the lenses. They're so much softer than my air optix ones were and stick to my eyes better.

I started stressing out when I got home and am now reading that everyone hates total 30 lenses and that they are way worse than air optix ones. Has anyone had good experiences with total 30? I already bought the year long supply of them so... 😭 I think my doc mainly switched me because of my irritation with air optix but I'm just seeing people say that total 30 are more irritating and I'm worried. Are yall just wearing them for too long?

monthly contact ruined after 3 hour wear

hi there, I've been using contacts for 6 years and this happened to me a week ago. I put on a new pair of contacts to go out for dinner and the morning after the left looked like this. I use alcon total 30, paired with a solution my optometrist recommended and which usually works fine, but it's been a week and the contact looks the same. I've tried cleaning it many times and i also changed the solution inside the case, but it's not getting better. Could it be that my eyes are the problem? Lately when I try to put on contacts (not the one in the photo) it feels like there is something scratching my right eye, always in the same spot, while the left eye feels like I'm wearing the lens inside out, though I'm not. I've stopped wearing contacts for a week now and I've been using some calming eye drops, but it doesn't seem to be getting better. My eyes look fine and I don't have any redness. Could it be that I scratched my cornea? What do you suggest?

EDIT: since a few of you asked, the solution I've been using is called "solo care aqua" by Menicon, it was specifically suggested by my optometrist and I've never had any issues with it.

How do you choose a brand?

I’m looking to start wearing contacts (I’ve been wearing glasses my whole life) but am overwhelmed with how many choices there are. I’ll probably order online. How do I know what brand and type will work best for me? I’ve worn single-use soft lenses twice before but that was just because I was dressing up for Halloween and my glasses didn’t match the costume.

crazy discolouration

last night I took out my contacts and almost instantly the solution was yellow and it turned dark brown. I have no idea what happened, or how quickly it happened but it was fast enough that I had noticed while the case was still open. I was out and about drinking (I don’t smoke) but I’ve been a contact wearer for 20+ years and I don’t mess around with cleanliness when it comes to my eyes.

in my eye it was normal. no pain or sensitivity. not an old case. The right contact was completely fine.

I actually thought I dreamt the whole thing as this is so crazy.

There was also this odd bit of substance floating in the case as well.

I have been on a topical steroid for eczema around my eyes but I don’t see that being the culprit. I can’t imagine anything in my skincare routine getting in the case and being this crazy of a culprit.

What could possibly be happening???

Contacts while at a lake

Hi all, brand new contact lens wearer here.

I’m still on my trial period, and have an appointment next week to confirm the fit and buy lenses.

My current trial lenses are monthlies. My question is, what do you guys who only wear contacts do while going to a lake or general water activities?

I’m going to a lake cabin at the end of July. I normally go paddle boarding as I’m not a huge swimmer, but obviously paddle boarding carries risks of falling into the water. Normally I wear my glasses and hope they don’t fall off, with contacts I know this carries a risk of infection or even going blind. I’m not sure what to do here. I can’t really not wear them at all because my prescription is pretty high.

Should I ask my doctor about dailies instead? Should I get goggles incase I fall into the water? I can’t exactly take my lenses off at the lake. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Struggling to focus my sight in toric lenses... sometimes.

Hi yall

I have mild astigmatism (comparable to about -2 on both eyes). Because of my sensory issues, i never wear glasses and only wear contacts (dailies) when reading for longer periods of time.

When i put my contacts on, about three out of four times there will be no issue. But on some days, my contacts will just "not work right". The visual image will look perfectly fine, but I will REALLY struggle to keep my sight focused (and be completly unable to focus on certain distances), and experience growing nausea/headache.

I have tried washing, reapplying, and putting on new ones multiple times, and it very rarely fixes the issue, so I assume the problem is me.

Am I supposed to like... train my brain a certain way? Or is there a chance that I'm applying them wrong?

Daily/monthly and contact lens cleaners

Okay so I am in week 3 of my trial and a REALLY wanted to love the dailies.... and they feel so scratchy compared to the monthlies.
I have astigmatism as well so i guess that also complicates things. It's almost like the one eye doesn't like the thinner lenses? I don't know if this is normal or not or if I am imagining it?

I also want to get a "contact lens cleaner" - like a little ultrasonic device for the monthly lenses (I went back to these after trialing the daily lenses)... are they a gimmick? It seems to work well according to ratings but I am so new to this so I don't really know if they do anything.

Please help me out lol (and be kind) this is new for me 😄
