Colored contact fitting at home?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I've been wanting to wear colored contacts for an event and I went in and asked about the fitting in a store. I asked about the curvature of the eyes and if that needs to be tested and they told me that its usually tested by just putting the lenses on your eyes. So my question is, why can't I do that at home? Should they be testing it some other way? I don't have issues with my eye sight so I don't need prescription lenses. They also told me I won't need a normal check up since I can see just fine.

Obviously yes, the store would have more size options so by fitting there I would know what I need. But I don't have time to order lenses so if the ones I can buy in person don't fit, I just won't wear contacts.

What is silicone hydrogel? Why do optometrists often prefer it to other contact lens materials?

Silicone hydrogel is a water-based plastic material used in soft contact lenses. It is an advanced, highly breathable lens material that allows significantly more oxygen to reach the cornea than other materials. The high oxygen permeability of the silicone hydrogel not only provides lasting comfort, but it also helps keep eyes healthy in the long term.

Although optometrist’s recommend contact lenses based on an individual’s vision and lifestyle needs, they often prefer contact lenses made from this material to hydrogel ones. Let’s learn the reasons behind the same:

  • Superior oxygen permeability (Dk/t) – Silicone hydrogel lenses allow much more oxygen to permeate through the contact lens and reach the surface of the eye in comparison to hydrogel lenses. These high-permeability lenses help keep the cornea healthy in the long run by protecting against hypoxia (low oxygen levels).
  • Long-lasting comfort – Since the eyes get a high level of oxygen throughout wear, silicone hydrogel contact lenses offer better comfort compared to hydrogel lenses. Reusable lenses, such as monthlies and two weeklies, made from silicone hydrogel, ensure they remain breathable and comfortable throughout their wearing cycle.
  • Better water retention offering longer wear duration – Contact lenses made from silicone hydrogel can be worn for a longer duration (up to 16 hours) than those made from hydrogel. These lenses are ideal for individuals with an active lifestyle, who spend long hours on digital screens or whose eyes are more susceptible to dryness.
  • Suitable for extended wear – Some of the contact lenses made from silicone hydrogel can also be worn as extended wear lenses if recommended by the optometrist. They are suitable for continuous wear throughout the day and night for a specific period (typically a week) without the need to take them out.
  • Improved eye health – As the silicone hydrogel contact lenses allow more oxygen to pass through them, they help reduce the risk of complications such as redness and corneal hypoxia.

Hope this was of help!

I often sleep with my contacts in for one night. I have no problem though. Is that bad? Does it damage my eye although i have absolutely no problem taking them out the next day?

Already told everything above😁 I hope someone does have a bit more knowledge or self experience and can tell me more about the health effects.

Red eye after wearing contacts

I have seasonal allergies, but other than that have never had issues with contacts before. Is this redness due to allergies to pollen or maybe pollen getting trapped under the contact lens? It formed almost a red ring around my eye… color went mostly back to normal after i took it out, just want to make sure its not anything too serious

If I get single-vision contacts, how will that effect my reading vision?

I am getting old (45F) and now my up-close reading vision is going bad.

I have had regular glasses for distance vision since childhood.

I don't really want progressives or multi focal lenses. I particularly worry about going down stairs, as I already have a balance problem.

I was thinking about getting single-vision contact lenses for distance, then just getting dollar-store reading glasses.

Is that a stupid idea?

Can monthly contact lenses fall off during fast movements like front flips?

I got monthly contact lenses for grappling, but in the warmup you need to do forward rolls and sort of front flips and that, and i'm scared that they will fall off and my money going to waste

Of they fall of can i clean them quickly and put it in my lens case?

Yes i know daily contacts are better for this but being three times as expensive, yeah

Thanks in advance

Scleral lens cleaning

I've been using Clear Care (sometimes the Walmart knock off) and have been reasonably happy with it.

Lately, I've had trouble with the solution boiling out (for lack of a better term) of the case. By the morning, half the solution is gone and the top half of my lenses are sitting high and dry - out of the solution.

Anyone had issues like this? I think this peroxide cleaning routine is pretty good otherwise.

Contact lenses Worth it?

I’m sure this has been asked hundreds of times, but I’m really on the fence about getting contacts. The main thing is I’m worried about misusing them and then messing my eyes up somehow, but I really don’t like wearing glasses. Am I just overthinking the risks?

General Do’s and Don’ts for a new contact wearer?

I wanted to try contacts so I got two different trial pairs to see if I can tolerate them and which I like better.

I know the following:
-not to sleep in them, even for naps
-rinse them in palm with solution before putting in eyes
-I know how to tell if it’s inside out or not

I’ve been needing to put a drop of ‘Blink dry contacts’ in my eyes about once per hour to keep them from being dry and blurry but I think that could just be my eyes adjusting.

Is there any other major general advice you’d wish you would’ve known when you first started wearing contacts?

Do tinted contact lenses for photosensibility exist?

I do not need glasses for my view, I wear glasses because I absolutely need to wear tinted lenses with blue light filters to lessen my photosensitivity. That means that when I look outside, when I look at screens, or when flashing lights occur, I get heavy migraines and eye strain.

Now, this is a burden because I *love* reading comics on my phone. Especially lying down in bed sideways. But, obviously, wearing glasses when lying in bed sideways isn't the most… comfortable experience.

So, I'm wondering… Do they do contact lenses that mostly tint the view? Not like cosmetic/cosplay lenses that change only the iris's colors, genuinely tint the view.

I need contacts but I'm worried about the risks

I was told by an eye Dr. that contacts would be better for me because I have antimetropia (one eye nearsighted the other farsighted) and glasses give me headaches and can mess with depth perception?? He said contacts are better for that because they're directly on the eye so theres no issue with the minification/magnification. Well I didn't get to ask many questions because I was rushed and the whole appointment was kind of disorganized

I was perscribed biweekly lenses, I haven't picked them up yet though

I'm scared because I will be starting an immunosuppresant medication soon, which will put me at much more risk of infections

I'm not trying to sound dumb but I'm scared of the risks (I have OCD and anxiety it's not a good combination). Like infections, abrasions, and amoebas causing blindness?? I know it happens when you don't take care well enough, but I'm scared about something happening by accident. I would hope I would always remember to never keep my contacts in during sleep or showers but I'm still worried

Also, I live with a very unhygenic hoarder parent and there are not many clean places in the house(I really really try to keep my room and the bathroom clean, but it's difficult and out of my control. The bathroom has mold) Like I said I have OCD so I'm worried about cleanliness, sorry if this makes no sense in context

Are my fears overblown? Am I really paranoid? I'm just scared

How often can I switch between glasses and contacts, and which type of contacts should I buy for this?

Hi! Maybe a weird question, but I have two different hairstyles that I alternate between, and one of them looks good with glasses, and the other looks better without. With that in mind, how often can I switch between the two? If I wear contacts for a few days then glasses the next day will my vision be screwed up?

Also wondering if i should get daily contacts or monthly contacts, and if how I'd need to switch between glasses and contacts might affect that? Dailys seem more convenient but much more expensive, and monthlys seem less convenient with the sterilisation and such, but less expensive. Any help is appreciated :)

Right eye suddenly can’t tolerate lenses

I’m new to contacts; I got a trial of the monthlies and had no issues for the first several days. However out of the blue, my right eye cannot tolerate contact lenses AT ALL. The second my eye even comes into contact with the lense, it immediately starts reacting by watering and turning red. When I put it fully in, it feels like I have a foreign object in my eye. I even tried soaking the lense in the solution for a while and retrying, and that had the same effect. Why is this happening all of the sudden? Is there a way to correct this issue? My left eye is completely fine with it. It’s just my right eye that has the issue.

After many tries, found the first colored contacts that didn't irritate me

Over last couple of year, tried many monthly colored contacts available for my power (-5.5). Issue was rha that they irritated me an dafter removal, the eyes didn't feel good. So couldn't wear any lenses for couple of days.

Yesterday tried Bausch & Lomb Lacelle Monthly and they were perfect. They are also cheap (₹1000 / $10).

The only issue is that there are no detailed images to check them before buying. So you have to gamble with color options. Tried Pure Hazel, which is a bit lighter for my skin tone. Would try others over the months.

Blurry/fluctuating vision after contacts with no pain!?

I wore contact lenses today after a long time (I’ve been wearing them since I was 14, I’m 20 now)

I think I may have worn the wrong prescription too. I also switched between two different lenses and accidentally kind of pinched/irritated my eye while removing one. Since taking them out, my left eye vision feels slightly blurry/off and fluctuates a bit, like one small area seems less clear than the rest. There’s no pain, redness, major light sensitivity, or discharge, just this weird blurry feeling and some watering/itchiness. It’s been a few hours and I’m really anxious about whether this sounds like temporary irritation/dryness/hypoxia or something more serious like a corneal abrasion. Has anyone experienced something similar?

UV Blocking Lenses?

I saw a video recently of someone wearing the now discontinued Nike contact lenses and would like to wear something similar for hikes and beach days. Does anyone know of contact lenses that block UV light?

Pain after taking them out?

Hey all! I’ll keep this short and sweet. Also sorry in advance for any misspellings I’m typing this with one eye squinted lol.

So I’ve been wearing contacts for around the last three years and this has never happened to me before. But I cane back from the optometrist yesterday, and the new contavts she had me wear, the one om the left felt funky, but decided it was fine. Tonight when I was going to take them out, they felt almost syuck to my eyes and when I took them out I got the worst sharp stabbing pain. My eyes are currently watering and I cannot open my left one.

Did I scratch it or something? Help. Would eye drops belp?
