Dark Sky Party @ Dexter

Alright friends, the big one is a week away. July 11th. Our big Dark Sky Star Party of the summer. There is only going to be one this year, so be sure not to miss it. There will be two quality telescopes given away to children at this event, one for each age group 8-12 and 13-18. Winners also get a year of membership in the Astronomical Society.

We decided to hold this party at Dexter State Recreation Site again this year in spite of the new $10 per car parking fee. We recommend carpooling, or bringing your State Parks Pass if you have one. The Eugene Astronomical Society will be able to pay for a limited number of parking passes for some visitors. You don't have to accept it and can "pay it forward" to someone that could use the help if you can pay the fee on your own.

The dark sky at Dexter makes for some excellent observing. Everything you can see from town looks so much better out there, and you will be able to see some things that are nearly impossible in town.

Come and see galaxies, nebulae, star clusters and more through dozens of telescopes.

This event is so much fun, it's actually what got me hooked on amateur astronomy. Check the EAS event page for more details.

First Quarter Friday: Star Gazing

Hello again everyone. Sorry I'm a little later than I meant to be posting about this but tomorrow, Friday, is our Star Party at Emerald Park in Eugene. I was a little busy yesterday, we had a really neat occultation yesterday midday and I went stargazing at a dark sight last night. We have been having so much fun at these star parties I hope you all can join us. As always, weather dependant.

See the event page for some important info. This one is scheduled for 9:15 and we will probably be starting out with the moon and moving on to some of the brighter objects as the sky begins to darken.

Clear dark skies,

Bjørn

Solar Sunday!

We had so much fun at our Star Party yesterday, that we decided to have a one star party tomorrow.

The seasons have changed and the Sun is once again a familiar sight, so EAS members will be hosting a Solar Sunday observing party from Noon to 2:00 on May 24th in Alton Baker Park. Join us near the scale model Sun to the west of the duck pond for a look at our closest star through our safely filtered solar telescopes.

Urban Star Gazing

The Eugene Astronomical Society is presenting a Star Party again this month at Emerald Park in Eugene.

Friday May 22nd.

Weather permitting, the party will begin at 9:00 pm, and go until about 11:00. Spring is galaxy season to us astronomers, and the season is wrapping up. Now is the time to come see galaxies and galaxy clusters before we lose them to the western horizon. We are starting to see some of the early summer stuff too, like the Great Hercules Cluster, a globular cluster with several hundred thousand stars. The wonders are many. Don't miss out on this fun, free event, and bring your friends. We'd love to see you there.

You can see more details and important information on the EAS website.
