World Cup games and Accessibility

Ive seen a few posts asking questions about accessibility access with little answers, so wanted to provide my experience from Canada v Qatar.

FIFA Accessibility Info

tl;dr:

  • have a plan, if possible arrange a ride with a trusted friend
  • take photos of the SPARC parking permit
  • minimal traffic along Pacific/Expo even though traffic DT may be heavy.

We used the accessibility drop off site on Nelson between Expo and Pacific. The only way to access Nelson is via Marinaside Crescent at Davie St. There was VPD traffic control in the roundabout limiting access so you need to provide proof. Proof can be a mobility assistance device (cane, walker) or SPARC parking permit.

From there its a short walk over to entrance 5 with spots to rest if needed. Inside the gates on the left is a tent where you can request wheelchair and assistance up to your seat. They should ask if you'd like to be picked at the end of the game as well.

At the end of the game an assistant should find you in your seat. I overheard an assistant say they were sent to the wrong row so you may need to flag down someone for the return trip.

Heres where it goes sideways. Attempting to get a cab after a game was extremely difficult. There is limited traffic on Expo/Pacific so nearly impossible to flag down a cab, in addition there is no ride hailing permitted on Nelson.

When we arrived back at the Nelson pickup/dropoff site, there was another group waiting for their pre-booked cab. There were padded chairs and a tent so its not unconformable to wait, not sure if these were provided by FIFA or part of the hotel near by. After a short wait for our cab, I decided to book an Evo car share a short walk away, then drive back to the pickup site, show VPD traffic control a photo of the SPARC permit and pickup my guest. The other group had said their cab was finally assigned and on the way (30min past original requested time).

Traffic from Burrard to BC Place along Pacific/Expo was minimal before and after the game. There was limited through traffic so while downtown is busy, it was easy to get in and out.
