Caregiving and the BC Healthcare System
I am looking to gather and learn about people’s experiences accessing resources for caregiving of elderly or (medically not great) middle-aged people within the BC healthcare system. Most responses to similar questions on Reddit are based on the American healthcare system, which of course is very different.
Are there systems in place for the families of the individuals to be able to access nursing help/personal care help? Can home health care or care homes be subsidized? Or are the families left to handle it? What is the help that is provided for normal, non-wealthy people who are citizens?
My parent has chronic conditions and is very medically anxious, and every so often I am tormented by it. Plus I am from a culture where it is expected for you to caregivers to your elderly (especially if you are female) and I feel like my parent expects it from me. But, I am not capable of it, in any way and I’m very sure of it. I am the only person living with them.
If you are someone in their twenties dealing with this kind of thing in British Columbia I would especially love to hear from you. But responses from anyone is greatly appreciated.

ctvnews.caHaida Gwaii visit for solo female?
My wife is going to be on her own for five days on Haida Gwaii. We were both going to be kayaking but she’s messed up her neck and we’ve paid the deposit. She’s a landscape architect and would LOVE to do some old growth exploring but is rightly a little concerned to wander off on her own onto trails or into the woods.
Can anyone recommend a naturalist and/or First Nations guide to help her explore and gain some educated knowledge? She’s in Massett for 2 nights and Skidegate for 3.
Visiting Clearwater and Wells Gray this summer.
Hey Fam. Our family is driving up to Clearwater this summer and staying for a few days. I have a few questions.
We plan on heading into Wells Gray Park and noticed Google Maps has the road heading into the park labelled as 'unpaved'. How unpaved are we taking? Gravel? Rocky? Pot hole-y? We're driving a Model 3.
Also, what else should we check out around Clearwater?
Thank you.
BC Hydro Chatbot Needs Improvement
BC Hydro chatbot keeps asking me if I want to defer my payment. I have no idea why, I don't have an overdue balance, and I was just asking if they were open 😅
Chatbot needs some work. No, I'm not relying on the chatbot... it's just an oddity I observed today, that's all.
No hate. BC Hydro is great :)
Looking for FSR Boondocking recs within 2 hours of Vancouver
I've been to the FSR Safety Info site. I've been to Sites & Trails. I've cross-checked everything against Back Road Status to make sure they're open. I've done so much homework my eyes are swimming.
And I still don't know where to head tomorrow.
I'm coming from New Westminster and a friend will be catching up, so I'm not trying to range too far. I was considering Vedder Mountain, which isn't too far. Or maybe Tamihi Creek. Or perhaps I should go the other direction and check out Florence Lake.
The problem I'm running into is that I can't really seem to find much info on what the areas are actually like, or even the real conditions of the roads leading up to them.
I'm with a dog that loves to hike, so having trail options is key. Also, my friend will be following in a sedan, so I can't pick anywhere too rough of a ride in.
That all in mind, I'd love to hear some thoughts or suggestions on where to go. Thanks!
Camping in BC
Hi everyone, I’m hoping some of you have some recommendations on good campsites throughout the province
A few of my friends and I are planning a camping trip in September for a friends birthday and are trying to find a good spot that’s
-Near a lake (or body of water that’s swim-able)
-That’s pretty “secluded” as we’re going to have a dog with us that struggles with reactivity and think its best to try and avoid other people/pets (the dog will be leashed 24/7 so no wildlife concern but I don’t want him to be stressed out or barking his head off)
-has enough space for a camper to park
+ a boat launch if we bring it
We’re very respectful and we won’t let the whole world know about secret spots
If anyone has any recommendations that would be awesome!

cbc.caBest health care plan with an HSA
My employer has tasked me with finding an extended health care plan for myself and my coworkers.
Concenscus is pretty simple. Basic benefits and dental; and many people are asking for a Health Spending Account (HSA).
The first two should be pretty simple. I reached out to Pacific Blue Cross and the rep I got said that most extended health care (including them) don't have plans with an HSA. I find it hard to believe, but figured I'd throw it here.
FYI: No real budget, but I think we're aiming for $250 or less per a single person.
