RE: A’ja Wilson

A question on value-based metrics versus standard deviation: how can we adjust for quality of competition to determine if A’ja Wilson is as dominant as we think? If a player is this successful over a long stretch, how can we tell if she is this good or the rest of the league is that bad? No political opinions allowed, please.

I just had this removed from r/premierleague, so help: would City be innocent under an American salary cap?

I can’t tell if they actually cooked their books or simply spent a larger fraction of revenue on players than allowed. If it’s the latter, they have the opportunity to pull a massive reversal on the Premier League and claim that it shouldn’t have the power to tell clubs how to spend their money just so they can force an arbitrary fraction of revenue to be spent elsewhere. The key words to me are fair play and sustainability: it makes it sound like City are not allowed to have a payroll that much higher than the rest of the league, or perhaps they can’t determine if PSR (Profit/Sustainability Rules) is a hard or soft cap. Btw I’m an American.

Re: Gunnar Thordarson

I’ve read four different reports on the passing of Gunnar Thordarson. But the problem is none of them noted that he conducted the orchestra for the début Icelandic entry in 1986, including from RÚV itself. Does anyone know whether there might be two people with this name but one with a second S in his last name? The graphics from NRK (above) spell it Thordarsson so i don’t know what’s happening.

Re: TV Production

I’ve been thinking about the RSN situation since the Hurricanes announced they would allow the league to produce their television broadcasts. I’ve reckoned the best idea to clean up this Diamond mess is to use these successor networks to fill the void left from the Diamond collapse. Surely I can’t be the only one that views BravesVision as a spiritual successor to SportSouth/FSN South and Southeast. If so, why can’t they fashion themselves Hurricanes, Hornets, Predators, Hawks, and Grizzlies contracts? Am I missing something about the current NHL landscape or impending baseball lockout? I’ll put this in r/braves too for further dissemination.

Eagles, DT Jalen Carter agree to four-year, $152M extension

Is there some massive difference between a defensive end and a defensive tackle? This sounds like a gross overpay for a player who has averaged only 4.5 sacks a year after getting drafted 9th overall in 2024 and has had character issues since before he won the 2022 national championship.

Presenting…the San Antonio Stearns!

After getting manhandled by James Dolan’s pet project in the Finals, the Spurs just signed a horrible Wemby to $50.4 million for the next five years with a player option. I don’t know what’s worse: that they think he’s worth that much or these massive rookie contracts for players that haven’t demonstrated their long-term value.

KUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCH

How long until Martin St-Louis realizes the team with the best individual player should win the series? First he lost the Conn Smythe in 2004 as a player (I guess Richards had it wrapped up before Game 6), then he gets manhandled by the 2014 Kings, now he has no answer for 38-86. This is getting ridiculous. As much as I don’t want a rematch of 2022 that’s what we’re getting unless the Habs win Game 7 and Hagel doesn’t turn into a favorite for the Conn Smythe. The only team with anything close to Kucherov is COL and Vasilevskiy is the best goaltender left.
