Black Directors in the Criterion Collection

I just read the New York Times Article about the lack of Black directors in the Criterion Collection circa 2020. Looking at things now, I thought that criterion was pretty good with its inclusion of movies from Black directors, but I guess they did most of that in the past six years.

One thing that was interesting about the New York Times article was that most of the movies mentioned as things that should be added to the Criterion Collection have since been added.

I wanted to get other people’s feel for this, since I only started becoming familiar with Criterion around two years ago.

Are there good reasons why I feel this way or am I just goofy?

I thought I didn’t like action movies until I started watching East Asian stuff. I’ve seen a little bit of kung fu, chambara, and 80s Hong Kong action through exploring Letterboxd and I thought they were all much more interesting that most US action movies. Do you think they are actually different or do I just like subtitles?

Black women - where do you get your braids done?

My usual girl changed her schedule and it no longer matches up with my work schedule :( i’d like a wash, detangling, and box braids done. Nothing too crazy.

I’d like to watch a movie with terrible editing. Any suggestions?

I am watching more bad movies to appreciate the good in my life. I don’t think I am good at pointing out abysmal editing, so I want better examples of it.

Who is your favorite director that’s not Nolan, Villeneuve, Tarantino, Scorsese, or Kubrick?

The MAGA-ification of Hollywood is going to be so boring

Found this article! Of course, a bad film industry is not the absolute worst consequence of MAGA, but I do feel terrible for all of my friends and peers in the film industry trying to make cool, new art. Don’t much like the surveillance aspect either 🙃

I would not mind if Hollywood were dethroned internationally though. Perhaps it already has been. I live in the US and I already kinda ignore it.

Who are your most watched directors of the year so far?

Here are mine as of July 17. Eager to see how this morphs throughout the year.

I don’t know every single evil movie in set in New England, so I need your help

Got the idea for this movie while watching In the Mouth of Madness. RIP Sam Neill.

I know most Stephen King *books* would fit here, but I don’t know if many adaptations would fit because I forgot if they take place in haunted New England.

I know we say this all the time, but please have your dog on a leash

I was walking to a restaurant on Baldwin Avenue when all of the sudden this little dog ran up to me and started nipping my pants leg. There was another similarly sized but grey dog barking behind him. I looked around to see any evidence of owners but I couldn’t find anyone nearby. I hope they are okay!

I’m not saying this because I think the dog could have seriously attacked me, but it doesn’t seem safe to have a dog wandering on the sidewalk. Not only is it surprising for people walking by, but I know someone who accidentally ran over an unleashed dog who suddenly bolted into the street. The dog survived, but she felt terrible and she kept replaying the events in her head over and over again. She said she didn’t even see the dog at all.

Please protect your pets and have them chained if they are outside!
