Tail Regrowth Progress

When Pharoah first dropped his tail I started to try and find reference pictures for what to expect a healthy tail regrowth process to look like, but I had a lot of trouble finding anything. I found a few fresh tail drop pictures from Blue Tongues, but that was about it. My herpatology textbook has a CT scan of a partially regrown tail, but I don't have a CT scanner 🤣

SO! In an effort to help anyone in the future who has a regenerating tail, I'm taking a LOT of pictures of the little guys nub. The tail drop happened May 12th, on the site of a previous injury (rehab animal). Most recent picture is from a day or two ago, so about a month and a bit post drop.

A description of the process so far:

No bleeding occurred at all during the drop. All I did was do a quick rinse with an animal safe wound cleaner to make sure it was sterile and nothing got caught in it. The wound scabbed over. The scales kinda curled in at the very end and the whole thing looked raw and sore for the first week. Eventually an entire cap of scale and scab fell off of the tip, and left pink scale-less skin underneath. Then the new growth started to become visible. Per my herp textbook, this initial structure is actually cartilage, not bone! He's sleeping a lot during this process, but I'm not sure how much to attribute that to the tail regeneration energy vs all the other healing he's doing.

Age Estimates?

For reference, from nose to butt he's 4 inches! I couldn't get him to hold still long enough for a picture lined up with a ruler, so you'll just have to trust my measurements 🤣

I've had Pharoah for about a month, he came to me as a very sick and injured little guy. He's my first skink, but not my first lizard. When I first got him I put him somewhere at 3-4 months, which would mean 4-5 months now. I have no idea how accurate that actually is (I know Schneider’s are generally on the smaller side) other than he's definitely very young. I'll put his intake picture in the comments below in case it helps pin his age down, but I'm leaving it out of the main post because it's not easy to look at.

Rehab Schneider’s Skink

About a month ago I found myself suddenly taking care of this little critter. An absolutely delightful little guy! He's had a rough start to life, but every day is getting stronger. I have no idea what his history before last month is, but it can't have been easy. He was on deaths door when he was dumped, dying of dehydration, tail rot, and fresh wounds. Now he's already regrowing his tail, and almost clear to stop his antibiotics. A fresh shed has him looking SO good! His personality is starting to show now too, he's so bright and curious about the world.
