NUS median salaries over time (by faculty)

Remarks:

  • Meant to be illustrative - there's a lot of nuance missing in the individual faculties (eg. inside NUS business - bach of biz admin with and w/o honours is 6k VS 4.8K for 2025
  • NUS degrees change over time - I've had to make some exclusions/assumptions
  • Dentistry has actually grown the slowest → slower than inflation in fact
  • For context - the median gross income for full-time residents in Singapore is $5,775
  • Tech gravy train over ❓

Data notes:

  • Data is median of medians (ie. Computing's median is 6,000 for 2025)
    • 4 degrees represented under School of Computing for 2025
      • Median of the following 4 values: 6400, 6000, 6000, 5700 → 6000
  • College of Design and Engineering was previously Faculty of Engineering
  • Excluded Law, Music and YNC to reduce cognitive overload
  • Using gross median salary. For context:
    • Basic is fixed base pay only
    • Gross is basic plus overtime, commissions, fixed allowances and other regular cash payments

2.5 weeks of cookhouse food

Name: Cookhouse @ Sungei Gedong Camp (near entrance)
Location: 1 hour away from civilisation
Cost: $0 - $6, 2 years of my life (+10 years)

Overall:

  • Cookhouse food was a solid 6.5/10 for me. Most of it was passable, with an okay-to-good mix of protein, vegetables and carbs. Carbonated drink options 👍
  • That said, the meals got stale after a while. It was a bit too formulaic imo. 90% of my meals were basically chicken + rice + sauce + veg.

Breakfast:

  • Unfortunately 6.30am is way too early, so I basically got breakfast at the canteen instead

Canteen:

  • Generally tried to order a mix of protein, fiber and taste. Standard order - chicken cutlet, veggie and egg.
  • Veggie dishes at the canteen always ran out q quickly. Either we old uncles prioritise our health or they just don’t cook enough …

Lunch:

  • Generally not too bad. Most days, there were 2 choices as well (altho it was mostly chicken in sauce A vs chicken in sauce B)
  • Nice time to catch up with friends here
  • Important not to miss lunch as the canteen closes around 2

Dinner:

  • Honestly very similar to lunch lol, but got a bit of the sian feeling

Others:

  • Managed to get ice cream once. Q sweet
  • Wish they provided bananas more often
  • Boxes of chips and Kinder Bueno were provided - which was awesome for the first few days but a bit jelat after
  • I was dieting so I brought in some tuna and bread. Actually a good choice since dinner is quite early at ~5.30PM. Common to get hungry at around 9 (especially if I did an evening run)

Outfield:

  • Had 1x combat ration outfield (Chicken with cream pasta iirc) Tasted the same as 10 years ago. Lol
  • Didn’t manage to eat my dessert pack, which I do regret now that I think about it
  • Downing a whole pack of worms from the The Natural Confectionary was awesome

Food 6.5/10, outfield 6/10, accoms 4/10, vibes 8/10. Would do again next year (not that I have a choice)

Majulah Singapura 🫡

ps. no they don't serve steak at the cookhous - photos do include outside camp days as well hahah

HDB prices no longer uponly?

I have been looking into buying a resale HDB and chanced across this index for HDB resale prices. A few things surprised me

  1. Prices were actually flat-to-negative from 2016 - 2020. It seems like public housing was actually managed well pre-covid?
  2. Recent growth has completely stalled. The index has been flat since Q3'25 and even dipped from Q1'26 → Q2'26. Will we see another dip from Q2’26 → Q3’26?
  3. I also added STI as a reference point for the Singapore economy - congrats to all believers. I remember having so many conversations about how SG stocks are crap and how the SG stock market is uninvestable
    1. (Yes - I know that majority of the outperformance by STI is due to the 3 banks + SGX’s stock)

What are your thoughts on HDB prices moving forward? Do you think ahgong afford to let it dip / stay flat?

Personally - I think we will continue to dip / have no growth. We’re running out of marginal buyers for HDBs and I expect more pain and retrenchment due to AI

How to reach FI faster?

sorry for the clickbait title, wanted to spark a discussion on this. (The original title was: How to get rich quick lol)

The consensus in this sub is straightforward. To reach FI / get rich, do the following:

  • Grow income and reduce expenses
  • Build 6 months emergency savings
  • After that, throw everything into VWRA
  • A bit of talk on optimising this process (in terms of fees, tax etc)
  • Exchange time for money for the next 5-30 years (depending on income)
  • Hit FI and post on r/singaporefi about how you hit FI and what you learnt

I think that’s all fine and dandy - but I would like to ask:

  1. What if I'm greedy?
  2. What if 1m65 is too late for me?
  3. What if I can and want to take more risk?
  4. What if I am willing to take a bet on a 30% chance to hit FI at 35 rather than a 100% chance to hit FI at 55?

My question is: what do the options look like when we go down the risk spectrum? My thought process is something like this:

[placeholder numbers]

Risk Level 1:

  • All in VWRA, est. 100% chance to hit FI by 55

Risk Level 2:

  • x % VWRA, 100-x % in alternative / high-risk investments
  • est. 100% chance to hit FI by 57 (2 more years if high-risk stuff zeroed)
  • 15% chance to hit FI by 50 (assume alternative assets 3-5x)

etc..

Naturally, more risk means a chance for both an earlier and later FI milestone (risk assets go to zero)

Of course, we also have a buff/debuff based on things like:

  • Our parents’ wealth levels
  • Friend group / peers
  • Lived experiences

Curious if you have thought about this? Would love to hear perspectives

ps. I started thinking about this after realizing my mom outperformed me in a 5y timeframe (she bought d05..)

d05 - 250%, vwra - 90% (excl. forex)

Goal: to eat smth different every meal for a week

a week of eats

TLDR: After my previous post, I decided to challenge myself and try something different EVERY meal.

Requirements: High protein, moderate calories (eg. fishball noodles will be out since it's quite carb heavy) generally get less rice + double meat portions

thoughts:

- this was honestly kinda tough. i'm addicted to soup. I miss drinking hot savoury broth so much. alr looking forward to fish soup tomorrow

- swensens has fallen imo. the battered fish&chips was damp and tasteless. personally won't be back

- missed home cooked stuff as well

- fruits are delicious but so heavy on the wallet

---

mon: fish soup, lotus root soup

tues: subway, wagyu

wed: chicken rice, gyudon rice bowl (+chicken breast)

thurs: toriq, genki

fri: caifan, beef friedrice

sat: macs, swensens

sun: genki (again..), salmon with rice

next challenge: thinking of trying out every single restaurant in the nearby mall lol

Foodsnaps over the past few weeks

Taking weight loss seriously this quarter - having subway/fish soup almost daily. Yes bit more pricey but I love the convenience, protein intake and the taste. Also loved having cooked dinner at home - so much healthier and cheaper in terms of calories and cost.

Highlights the past weeks:

  • Home cooked food for sure, parents LOVE steaming fish
  • Nan Hwa Chong Fish Head (812 N Bridge Rd)
  • Saizeriya (Lava Cake is to die for)
  • Meiji 30g protein milk
  • Subway (duh)

Lowlights:

  • BatterCatch - quite mid IMO for the price.
  • Fun Toast - Was about $6 for the set. Lo Mai Kai was really oily.
