Where can I find putu piring?

My wife and I came to Singapore for our honeymoon 3 years ago and are back soon. We only managed to find it at the food court in the airport.

Best curry puff at $1.50

It was a random curry puff at block 262 at Toh Guan. The stall sells kuehs, etc, so curry puff must be purchased from wholesale factory. At $1.50 it is cheaper than most. The potatoes and curry is also good has a bit of chicken. Question here. Anyone had the same curry puff at other coffeeshop or food centre? Really blessed to still have such heal and good curry puff

Let's create the Singapore National Day fast food zodiac

So I realised every National Day season, the fast food chains vie for the hearts of Singaporeans by coming up with the most Singaporean flavour burger.

Previous years we have seen:

  • Nasi Lemak
  • Salted Egg Yolk (not sure whether it was a National Day tie-in specifically or not)
  • Chilli Crab

This year, seems like all the fast food chains have the consensus to do something curry related.

I actually think it's fun to have a "zodiac" of twelve Singaporean flavours that will rotate every year. What do you think should be on the Singaporean flavour zodiac?

$3 toast set with nice eggs and teh-O

Value for money!

Nicely done eggs, comparable to those in expensive toast sets :) Though could have been served warm.

Toast at least is 2 full slices of bread, not the cut-in-half crumbly kind!

And with great tasting tea -- you hardly get this standard at Toast Box :( -- everything went down well.

Yummy!!

Salmon with Beurre Blanc Onions and Chiffonaded Asian Greens

Jk, just air fryered salmon with a lemon butter shallot sauce and cai.

Seriously though, Sheng siong is amazing value. We got a whole, chilled, 2.7kg salmon for $38, cleaned and filleted. Head cut nicely into 2, bones in another bag, got 8 of these fillets that will feed quite a lot of people. Think offer ends today, we bought one yesterday, asked a lady buying it about the salmon, then everyone around us bought one and all 6 remaining then it sold out around 5 pm.

Anyone got recommendations for what other fish to buy at Sheng Siong?

I wish all the sweating and increased heart rate from eating Heng Kee curry chicken mee counts as cardio, but alas...

When I last posted about Ah Heng curry chicken noodles, some of the comments pointed to Heng Kee on level 1 of Hong Lim. So here I am!

For Heng Kee, I really like the aromatic curry that is light enough to be drank directly, yet still tastes rich as a curry should. And the curry levels up significantly when you add some of their smoky sambal chili! I always go for beehoon and mee here, which in my view is a good balance between the bite/texture of the noodle and the beehoon's ability to soak up the curry.

The toppings are great quality too - the chicken is very tender, and the potatos are nice and soft. Special mention as usual to the taopoks: soaked through with so the bite releases a small, warm flood of that curry. And for some reason, the fishcake here has an amazing texture and taste. if anyone knows their supplier I'd happily trade you 2 reddit karma for it lol.

And for the million-dollar question: Yes I do think this is better than Ah Heng.

7/11 chicken breast flavours

Brooo I tried the curry bbq flavour just now. It slaps man. Tastes really really good, and it didn’t taste like stupid shit I eat just to get more daily protein. I was skeptical cause there was a heinous looking bright red one previously I can’t rmb what flavour but it was so bad, and so I always stick to herbs cause pepper one is slightly smelly, doesn’t mask the chicken smell well. But this one curry bbq is really really good. Tastes nice, pretty light for curry and it’s very fragrant, the taste is kind of like a mix of 75% indian fish curry and 25% thai green curry.

Just getting the word out so hopefully ppl buy that flavour and they don’t remove it after a while. Also, the trick with these 7/11 chicken breasts, I find, is to just leave it in the microwave for like a minute after it’s done, and then take it out and put it in the fridge immediately for like a good 2-3 min, makes it more tender instead of stringy.

Double-portion fried pork chops Shanghai kway teow that's hard to beat!

Seriously, this stall set the bar high for (low) price, (great) taste and (large) portion size.

Freshly cooked thin kway teow in dark sauce with egg, shreds of cabbage and chopped onions. Plenty of wok hei!

Nicely marinated tender pork chops that's lightly fried. So yummy :)

Did that 2nd photo make you salivate? Lol

At $5.50 + 3 for an extra serving of pork chop, this to me is unbeatable value for a deeply satisfying and full meal ;)

Punggol Nasi Lemak @Serangoon

$8. It’s alright. The chicken wing tastes abit better than other stalls, the achar is nutty enough. The rice is okish coconut-y.

Would be a 3/5 but they did slip in one more fish cake for additional $1. Too tired to question so I guess will just give 2.5/5.

I once queued an hour for this. It’s probably worth a 20min queue now.

A Noodle Story and Mei Mei drinks store

On an afternoon after returning home from work. I remember that I got to know this store, A Noodle Story from random news on my phone. The drink store near A Noodle is Mei Mei drinks stall. The signature Singapore Ramen set is $12.80 and a cup of soyabean milk is $1.70. I find that the Wanton have fresh juicy prawns inside. The potato wrapped around the prawn looks good and was crispy. The soup has a strong pork taste. I believe this is 1 of the cheap and good things that I can think of.

Paradise Biryani took my taste buds to paradise

Not the best photos, but this was hands down the best biryani I've ever had in my life.

Had the bamboo mutton biryani with the jeera rice and it was the most delicate but flavorful dish I've ever had. I don't even know how to describe it. They managed to elevate the mutton soup too.

Here's what I ordered:

  • Bamboo malabar mutton biryani $18.90
  • Mutton soup $7.90
  • Spicy flame prawns $17.90

Everything was 10/10. I want to go back tomorrow. & the day after. & the day after.
