Mcdonald’s Ice cream shrinkflation

I gave feedback to mcdonald’s about their ice cream size thinking their staff was not well trained. To my surprise, they called me back to say this is CORRECT!

By weight, this is the intended serving size for ice cream cones ACROSS ALL MCDONALDS IN SINGAPORE!

Thoughts?

Back in Singapore after 4 years - but just for 4 hours! Should I go back to eat at the old favourites or am I missing out on something new?

I'm transiting from Sydney, and have been to Singapore many times. I've usually made a beeline for Chicken Rice if I'm short on time (Maxwell, Katong), but have tried a fair bit of variety over the years as well - Pepper Chili Crab, Bak Kut Teh and so on.

So now I find myself with another layover at the end of this month, and the plan is the same as before. Land, take a taxi into the city, eat some food, and head back.

If that was all the time you had, and you were coming back after 4 years, give me your top spots to go, and what you would eat there.

Side quest: If the timing works out, I'm more than happy to shout a meal if you want to join in! (one couple / person only!)

Chashu Spicy Miso Ramen @ Yokohama Ramen

14.9 SGD not including service charge and GST

Really good - I asked for firmer noodles. Nice chashu pieces, complimentary hard boiled eggs, and you are going to be satisfied after finishing the bowl 🫡

One of my favourite cafes in the East Coast area

Humble Origins! They have a farm in Myanmar for their beans and they roast them in house. Their coffee suits me cuz it’s not sour 😂

Enaq Prata at Jurong - prata with more backbone than my middle manager

This isn’t the typical oily, doughy “sleepy” prata that we get from void deck coffeeshops. Enaq's prata has an extreme crunch that gives me the same satisfaction as stepping on dry leaves while walking my toddlers.

The exterior is a golden crispy fried dough, while the inside remains pillowy and soft. It’s almost like a croissant and a prata had a beautiful, buttery baby. And I absolutely love the ikan bilis sambal. I always dunk the prata into curry before scooping some sambal onto it. Perfection.

Enaq is one of the reasons why I can believe the central thesis of that Go West song - everytime I eat this prata I do feel like life is better!

Btw here's a tip - always order plaster, because the prata will always come hot!

Mix grill from Western Barbeque at Old Airport

Wanted to eat the steak from Holy Grill but they were sold out. This stall was my second choice and decided to try the mix grill as I was craving for some meat protein. They are lamb, pork and chicken topped with garlic sauce. Came with sides of an egg, fries and coleslaw. All for $13.

Surprisingly it is actually not bad. All the meats were tender and flavourful. I give it a 8/10 (just for today - not sure if the standard will be the same the next time I eat it lol).

Oh, skip the bun.

Singapore spice level is the lowest?

Just saw this board purported ranking spice levels in food in different places.

A bit peeved that they think Singapore's spice tolerance is the lowest, but how accurate is this?

Is it accurate or is just a gimmick to bait Singapore diners?

Orchard gateway yochi?

We don't live in Singapore but visit regularly. Very accustomed to seeing big lines around a new shop or product but genuinely confused about the constant massive lines at orchard gateway yochi.

Mostly students, fine, but that doesn't explain the staying power. So is it a special student discount or something else?

Black Forest Cake Home Baker

I have been ordering from this home baker. We are not related but I like to share good food.

Classic Black forest. Fresh cream not oily. Good chocolate sponge. Good chocolate cream. Great alcoholic cherries. Each of the ingredients is nothing crazy awesome but when it all comes together it is balanced and easy to eat. The alcohol hits the right spot for me. If you want crazy amounts of alcohol you can ask the baker. And each cake gives 12-16 good sized slices for a price of only $80+ when others are selling at 100+ and much smaller. I usually store it in the freezer for days and enjoy the cakes through the week. Her place is at pasir ris so grab or lalamove delivery fees can vary a lot. I am not posting her contact number here in case it flouts the rules here? Or it is permissable?

I want to eat the cake now but the last piece is reserved for my girl. Haha.

KFC Flatbread

I'm fairly certain this isn't scrambled eggs. It's steamed whipped eggs. I know KFC standards weren't high but man.

Mary Grace @ Tras Street

Those with Pinoy colleagues will have eaten their iconic cheese roll & ensaymada. Staff were attentive and good place to chill albeit a bit noisy. Prices are reasonable. I polished off the addictive chip thing with onion dip. Very very light and yummy. Highly recommended to make reservations as space is very small.

The Neighourwok at Clementi and Playmade Grapefruit Green Tea

I have read on this blog about The Neighourwok at Bukit Batok and plan to try their Clementi version after trying Coexist Coffee @ Hillview. There is already a blog on that outlet, so I don't want to post about it. The price I ordered is $7.30 for a small portion. The drink I ordered is from Playmade which is not at the food court. The Grapefruit Green Tea at the large portion is $7.40. In my opinion, Ah Jie Hokkien Mee is better as the ingredients are more. I like the Grapefruit Green Tea that I had already bought a few times at the Playmade at Hougang Mall. I like it because of the colour and the bitter sweet taste of the grapefruit. The drink stall at the food court has a very long queue.

Where to find the best tau suan in Singapore?

My favourite so far are Zheng Xing at Albert Hawker and Tiong Bahru Tao Suan at Tiong Bahru Hawker. Most tau suan are overly sweet or overcooked, resulting in mushy beans. Some places also give rubbish you tiao, so thin like eating paper.

Gluten free breakfast in Singapore

We want to relive our kaya-toast and runny-egg breakfast memories in Singapore but sadly my partner has gluten allergy (can eat traces like in soy sauce, not alot like bread).

What are the chances there are hawker or cafes that do gluten free baked goods? I'm assuming those that do will be the fancier cafes.
