Restoring original mantle piece

Hello there!! Two months ago myself and my partner moved into our first house, and it's a beautiful 1900 build! We've started some work in the bedroom and I've been trying to restore the original fireplace. Cleaned up the centre which is a treat compared to how gross (and sticky 😅) it was before.

I've started to chemical peel the gloss paint off the actual mantle (why does everyone cover everything in white gloss 🫣) and I'm surprised to find it seems to be plaster at the base of it? I can't find anything online about this - and every time I Google plaster mantle piece all the ones that come up are new and modern and white 😅😭 Is this the original piece just without any paint? I started with a test patch to see how it goes but now curiosity has deffo got me into stripping the full thing!

If anyone's seen anything similar or has any info about this that would be great!! Once it's fully stripped I think we'll decide between sealing it as is or giving her a fresh lick of paint ✨ I've attached some photos of it mid strip to where it's at now with the patch test - already got the next lot of stripper on the go 🤣

Thanks in advance for any comments! 🥳

Help removing Electric Fireplace

Hi everyone! Just bought my first home (yay!) and was looking for some help with regards to this electric fireplace. Old owners were really keen on it but it's just not my style, and with our house being a 1900 build I'm hoping the original fireplace might be hidden behind the plaster board. Only thing is I have no idea how to take this thing off 😅 It's just plugged into an extension lead so no worries with the electrics, just unsure how to start dismantling it. Tried to Google lens it and can't find the model either so no help there 🙈 Any advice really appreciated!

Help with clay soil

Hello everyone! I recently bought my first house and I'm super excited because we finally have a proper garden 🥳 Our last house just had a small yard that I made feel cosy with lots of potted plants - but I can't wait to get some of them in the ground at the new place!

Only issue is the soil here is very clay based. There were already two lavender plants growing in the soil (yay) - but I was wondering if there's anything I can do / buy to improve the soil quality so I can plant into it either this year or next 🩷 I've attached some photos of the areas I've cleaned out so far. Just de-weeded them and dug in turning the soil slightly with a garden fork. Any help greatly appreciated! 🌱

Suitable for mini pond conversion?

Hi everyone! Long story short I've bought my first home this year (yay!) and will be making a wildlife pond in the garden :) I've already got a spot put aside for it (very sheltered with plants nearby etc) and bought a small pond base.

While clearing out some other parts of the garden however, I found this little patch that has already been dug out and semi-lined with slate. It's got an old tree root in the middle of it and I wondered if I could line it out to create another mini pond? I think it'd look cute with the pre - existing root as a little way for the frogs to get in and out - but I'm not sure how I'd go about lining around it or if that's possible? Looking for some advice! If not I'll find another use for it and just continue with my pre-planned pond only :) Thanks in advance!
