What should I invest in?

Hello! I am relatively new to photography so I’m not looking to purchase anything right away. I do see however that new camera bodies/lenses can be quite expensive, so I want to do some research to see what I should be saving for and help out future me.

Currently, I have a Canon EOS 60D and an EFS 55-250mm zoom lens. I have been using it for wildlife photography, mainly for bird photography, and so far it’s treated me very well. I enjoy spending my free time going out looking for birds, learning how to use the camera, studying bird behavior and lighting, and coming away with better and better shots the more I practice.

There are times, however, where I feel limited by my gear, such as a sometimes spotty autofocus, lack of eye tracking, or simply not being able to get any closer to my subject, therefore not being able to get the close up, sharp image I would like.

Like I said before, I’m not looking to make an impulsive buy to upgrade my gear. One, because I’m aware that it’s a skilled photographer that makes a good image, not better gear, and two, because I don’t have the money do drop all at once for some upgrades. I’m just looking to see what I should potentially invest in over the next year or so as I save money and hone my craft.

The advice I’ve seen is that having a good lens beats out having a good body, so the research I’ve done have been for zoom lenses rated well for wildlife photography, such as the Canon 150-400mm ef lens.

If a body upgrade would be more recommended, I would appreciate some advice there because I haven’t don’t any research towards camera bodies.

Thank you in advance, I appreciate any and all help!

Tl:dr, I am looking for a camera body/lens to invest in that’s suitable for wildlife/bird photography. I’m interested in either a body with good autofocus/eye tracking, or a zoom lens that’s good for sharp images at a distance. My budget for either would be around $1500-$2000.

I got my first camera for my birthday a month ago, a Canon 60D with a 55-250mm lens. The learning process and the experiences of getting outside in the early mornings and evenings to find some new shots has been so fun so far! I’m excited to see what I can get in the future :)
