Beach spots in South or Central America for July-early August?

Seems like every decent beach destination I can think of in either South or Central America is really geared for December-April for good weather. I'm struggling to think of any options that might have decent conditions in July-early August. Any ideas?

I need some beach time and don't want make the flight over to Europe.

Confused in Bogota

I went to a well known salsa club last night in Bogota. I had a great time, it was all locals, but as far as I could tell every single person on the dance floor was dancing cumbia (or at least what I've known as cumbia).

I've taken a fair amount of lessons for salsa en linea (en 1 y en 2) as well as a little salsa cubana. I'm aware of other styles (like salsa caleña) though have never really danced them. I've got a little under a year of experience of pretty consistent practice.

The rhythms were, as far as I could tell, fairly normal salsa rhythms but absolutely no-one was dancing what I would normally call salsa. I learned a little bit of Mexican cumbia while in Mexico, and the dance they were dancing was basically that, though the music was a little different than Mexican cumbia.

I'm extremely confused. I tried dancing variations of salsa en linea and salsa cubana with partners I asked to dance, but not a single person throughout the night could even do a basic right turn in either style. I kept resorting to just the very basic cumbia/mexican cumbia steps and the few turns I know since those are the steps my partners seemed to know.

What happened? I chatted with some partners afterwards and they didn't consider what they were dancing to be "cumbia", and they seemed to suggest "cumbia" was different, so I really don't know what happened. Like I said the steps they were dancing were the same as what I would call mexican cumbia so idk.

Does anyone have experience with this in Bogota or Colombia in general? Do they consider that cumbia type dance to be "salsa"?

Learning while working on the computer?

Are there any good resources I could utilize while being on a computer 8+ hours a day that don't require 100% attention? I understand I won't learn as quickly but I would assume there might be something I can do to help improve.

Podcasts? Youtube videos in the background?

If you're not buying MSFT/MSFU at these prices what are you even doing?

MSFT is something like ~$10 (2-3%) from it's November 2021 price. The company is printing money, with something like 18% revenue growth for 8 consecutive quarters. It's literally cheaper now than the April 2025 tariff crash.

Biggest bargain on the market right now, IMO.

Mediterranean options on the sea without a car?

I'm looking to stay about a month this summer in the Mediterranean. I won't be able to rent a car or scooter to get around (no license), which sorts of limits my options.

I'm looking for something with the following criteria:

  • On the Mediterranean (and related, nearby seas e.g. Ionian, Tyrrhenian, Adriatic, etc.), either an island or a coastal village, town, or city.
  • Swimmable, extremely clean beaches nearby (i.e. no polluted water, as often found by e.g. large port cities and population centers).
  • Ideally, not a tourist zoo (I understand it's summer in the Mediterranean so places tend to be busier but don't want a zoo).
  • A location where I can get groceries on either foot, bicycle, or bus, within a reasonable time-frame (<35 minutes one way).
  • Budget is completely flexible

The conundrum of course is that places with the cleanest water and beaches tend to be farther from population centers, which often means those places require a car or motorbike or scooter to get around. I'm looking for those recommendations that just so happen to meet the above criteria.

Does anyone here have personal experience with a place that might match the above criteria?

For long term travelers - best cities for lock-n-leave apartments?

I'm a long term traveler and have been abroad pretty much the entirety of the last 4 years. I'm currently paying a rather high rate for a storage unit and for that and many other reasons I'm considering purchasing or renting a sort of "home base" in the U.S., which I might visit just a couple times a year for very short periods of time.

Are there any particular cities where this sort of setup is more common? I now this might come across as a rather bizarre question but for long term travelers who don't fully reside in another country abroad and who have a "home base" in the U.S., do certain cities make more sense then others?

What's the best U.S. city in a no income tax state to purchase a home base?

I'm considering things like:

  • Purchase price for an apartment/condo
  • Whether the housing market there is depreciating/appreciating/stable
  • Proximity to a common, major international airport
  • Ability to run errands when back in town without a car
  • Weather/temperature (e.g. is it safe to leave the place empty for 3+ months at a time)

...and other stuff like that. Consider someone who spends the vast majority of their time abroad and would simply use the apartment as a home base.

In your opinion, which city might be ideal?

Best islands or beach spots on the mainland without a car?

I'm hoping to spend about 3 weeks or so at a beach and nature location (either islands or mainland) in Greece later this summer. I won't be able to rent a car or scooter (no license) so I'm interested in finding a place where I can still get groceries and get to beaches and trailheads (trail running) via either walking, running, or bicycling. I'd like somewhere with very clear waters (i.e. no pollution from nearby population centers or nearby industry or whatever) and ideally a decent place for trail running or hiking.

Any particular recommendations? I understand places like Hydra don't have cars at all, so that's on my radar, but I also know it's incredibly expensive (yes, I know summer is obviously peak season and therefore pricey). I speak a little Greek and am perfectly comfortable with places off the usual tourist trails.

I have some ideas in mind but hoping to get some personal recommendations from you all. Thanks!

Nature forward options to combine with trip to Naples (next week)?

Partner and I are considering a last minute trip (next week) to Naples. Roughly a week and a half long. We'd like to spend maybe 5-6 days around Naples, and then book somewhere with a focus on nature for the remainder of the trip (i.e. definitely not another large city). A place where it would be possible to swim in very clean beaches (i.e. no pollution in the water), or do some hiking, and breath fresh air.

Does anyone here have any really good recommendations for this within relative proximity to Naples (e.g. 1-3 hours by train)? I'm sure there's lots of options but interested in your recommendations. I know the Amalfi coast is popular but I think we're looking for something more relaxing as I assume Amalfi will be totally packed. I know Capri and Ischia are popular as well. Just looking for some ideas! Budget is flexible so no constraints there.

Suggestion on state residency (U.S.), I don't qualify for those address services

Hey all, looking for some general suggestion here. Before anyone suggests it, I cannot use a friends address or the address of family members as a.) I've been out of the U.S. for many years and don't maintain any strong friendships there, and b.) family lives in a "sticky", very high tax state (and I wouldn't want to get them involved anyhow) so I don't want to open myself up to tax liabilities there. I'm a U.S. citizen.

I've spent more time than I'd like researching and calling some of the popular residency services found here (Dakota Post, SavvyNomad, etc.) and turns out I can't even get an address or declare residency that way. To use those services, you must provide Form 1583...which contains box 9g requiring at least one of the following:

  • Government-issued ID: U.S. State/Territory/Tribal Driver’s License or Non-Driver’s ID Card

  • Residential Lease: Current lease, or mortgage/deed of trust

  • Property Documents: Home or vehicle insurance policy

  • Auto Information: Vehicle registration card

  • Voting: Voter Registration Card

I have....none of these. My driver's license expired, I obviously don't have a lease (nomad), I don't have home insurance, I don't own a vehicle (again, nomad), and I obviously don't have a voter registration card since that would require state residency in the first place.

What are my options here? I'm interested in establishing state residency to get another driver's license as I'm interested in visiting some places where a rental car is a must. At this point it almost seems easier to just get residency in e.g. Mexico and then you basically just pay for a license. Anyway, just looking for suggestions, options seem quite limited. Perhaps someone has some unique or creative options I haven't thought of. I'm almost wondering if it's worth it to just get a rental lease for a few months just to use the address while getting these documents in order.

Favorite destinations for August?

Most of Europe is quite hot in August, with the exception of northern Europe (which I've already visited). What are some great places to spend August in? Preferably outside Asia due to time zone differences.

I lost a pair of sunglasses (with green and rounded lenses) near the west side of Parque Mexico this morning. Here's a map with the outlined area where they might be. I retraced my steps within minutes of noticing I dropped them, but didn't find them. I'm assuming someone quickly picked them up.

They aren't worth much (maybe €45 now) but they have significant sentimental value. Will offer MXN 2000+ reward for anyone that finds them.

I'm thinking about signing up for a residency service since I haven't found a better way to get an address for the purposes of getting a new driver's license. I've been nomadic for a few years and truly have no home base.

I'm a little concerned with the risk of identity theft when using these services...seems like it's not unimaginable that a bad actor might try to use my address in my name to e.g. open up a credit card or something. Anyone know more about this? Is this a legitimate concern or am I just worrying too much?
