Firefox won't open torrent program

There is something strange about firefox (snap version 153.0.4) and torrent programs. I have a number of different ones installed in my /usr/bin/ and I keep thinking that the firefox dialog should be able to select one ... but it will not let me open /usr or any other directory in / other than /home/myhome

Now, this makes no sense to me since the stuff in /usr/bin is accessible. The command ls -ld /usr returns drwxr-xr-x 17 root root 4096 Apr 8 2018 /usr

which should be okay?

Maybe it's time to say good bye to snap firefox???

Router issues on new install

I got my dish installed today and it seems to be working 100%. However, it appears that I now need to reconfigure every one of my alexa-plugs, etc in the house since the network has moved from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1. Is the a shortcut to this? I don't think I can change the starlink router address ... so, I probably just will spend a day having fun with plugs, unless someone has a secret to share?

Network confusion

I've upgraded with various versions on kubuntu too many times I think and am completely lost as to how my static IP is being set.

Whenever I boot it gets set to 192.168.0.27 which is perfect. But I want to understand where this ip address is coming from. My understanding is that ubuntu 26.04 is using netplan and the addresses should be set in /etc/netplan/somthing.yaml. But, that file doesn't have my address and is set to dhcp4: true

I do have a line near the top of my /etc/hosts file with my address, but I didn't think that was being read. Is it?

/etc/network is not being used either?

I'm quite confused (and dumb about networks).

Starlink install == no install

I ordered my starlink a few weeks ago with installation. The dish arrived, no problem. And it's sitting here in the box. However, despite my repeated attempts at trying to get SBPM to install the damn thing I get nothing but BS from them.

I have to add that I live in Canada and apparently SBPM use Integrated Solutions for there installs. SBPM say that their nice Canadians do operate where I live in SE BC ... but I have yet to hear from them. Honestly, I think the issue is that they don't have an installer here where I live and they will jerk me around for a few more weeks until they say "sorry, can't do it. You're on your own". In the meantime, Starlink is saying that in a few days they are going to start billing.

I've tried having a "chat" with the starlink AI and it is very nice to me, but totally without results. Ha!

I'm too old these days to start getting up on the roof for the install (well, getting up is okay, but the rapid stop when I fall off is nothing I want to experience!). And I don't know anyone around who does this kind of work.

Not sure what to do.

Buy hardware

I'm getting closer to committing to SL and went to the buy-me site. But, I see only the $10/month rental option for the hardware. Is it not available to buy outright?

48 amp charger

I had a new home charger installed a few weeks ago. It's a SWTCH and I had it hardwired which gives me 48 amp output. Oh, if you live in Canada it's a good deal since there is a program which will pay you back $0.10/kwh for charging at home.

My question: is there any reason NOT to use the full 48amp output? I understand the car can handle up to 50amps, so it looks safe. And, I have lots of juice on my panel, so no issue there either. Just wondering if charging at 48amp would put more strain on the car than a lesser rate?

TV Stations in Canada

I'm thinking of pulling the plug and getting a starlink. One thing holding me back is that I'll also lose my limited TV package my current WISP is providing. All I really watch are a few news stations and PBS for a short time each day. Does anyone know if I can get a mini-cable package to run on 'net in Canada?

Power Usage

I live in a semi-rural area and thinking of (finally) getting starlink. Question: In case of a power failure how large of a power backup would I need to have to run this for 24 hours?

Having some redundancy is important since we have no cell service in my local and I use wifi-calling ... so, no power means no netflix, but it also means no emergency calls.

Oh, I'd be using a standard dish permanently mounted on my roof.
