What does "merge mining" mean for Pepecoin, Litecoin, and Dogecoin?
Gm
TL;DR
We love miners 🐸
The answer:
Litecoin and Dogecoin miners can also secure $PEP, using the same hashrate.
Merge mining sounds complicated, but the idea is pretty simple once you break it down.
Normally, mining two different coins means running two separate setups — your hashing power on one chain doesn't help the other. Merge mining changes that: a miner can secure more than one blockchain at the same time with the same computational work, as long as the chains use compatible algorithms and support the mechanism.
The technical name is AuxPow (Auxiliary Proof-of-Work) — pioneered by Bitcoin and Namecoin back in 2011, and used by Dogecoin together with Litecoin since 2014. So this isn't new or experimental — it's a well-established, battle-tested setup.
For Pepecoin specifically: mining pools that already support Litecoin and Dogecoin can add Pepecoin as an additional chain to secure, without extra hardware or splitting hashrate three ways. As more pools enable Pepecoin alongside Litecoin and Dogecoin, the hashrate securing the Pepecoin network grows right along with two of the most established Proof-of-Work chains around.
Why it matters for a smaller chain like Pepecoin?
A brand-new blockchain starting from zero hashrate is vulnerable — it just doesn't have enough miners yet. By merge mining with Litecoin and Dogecoin, Pepecoin borrows security from two much bigger, established networks from day one, instead of trying to bootstrap that security alone.
How many blockchains exist for Pepe the frog?
I think I'll start posting simple polls from time to time for frens who are here but still think they own one of the Pepe tokens.
Let's start with an easy one:
How many Pepe blockchains are there?
The answer: just one.
There's exactly one blockchain built specifically for Pepe — Pepecoin ($PEP).
Everything else you'll find with "Pepe" in the name is a token, not a coin — meaning it runs on someone else's blockchain (usually Ethereum) rather than having its own.
Coin vs. token — why it matters ?
A coin has its own independent blockchain, its own miners/validators securing it, and its own rules. A token is a contract deployed on top of another chain — it depends entirely on that chain's infrastructure, fees, and rules, and it usually gives the contract owner some level of control over the token (transfer restrictions, blacklisting, minting, etc.) that a coin's holders don't have to worry about.
What's actually out there under "Pepe":
PEPE (Ethereum) — an ERC-20 token. Its smart contract has an owner-controlled blacklist function that has been used at least once to freeze a wallet holding ~$850K worth of tokens.
Pepecoin 2016 / Memetic — the original 2016 project, which moved from Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake in 2018 due to low hashrate and 51% attack risk, and whose "Pepe" branding later ended up on Ethereum as a separate token.
Various BSC/Solana "pepecoin" tokens — smaller, unrelated tokens riding the same name.
Pepecoin (PEP) — the only one of these that's an actual Layer 1 blockchain secured through merge mining with Litecoin and Dogecoin (via AuxPow), meaning LTC/DOGE mining pools can secure the PEP network at the same time, at no extra hardware cost. It launched with no premine, no VC allocation, and no ICO — no wallet holds more than 5% of supply.
Being its own chain means no smart contracts — so no DeFi, no programmability the way ETH tokens have. Liquidity is also thinner right now since PEP trades on fewer exchanges than the bigger ETH token. That's the real cost of independence — worth knowing either way.
What do you guys think about the poll idea? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
🚨 Pepecoin tip session 🚨
Last time we hit 160 upvotes, so today I'm tipping 160 $PEP per comment.
Tell me in the comments why you're all such degenerates and why you're still hanging around here
Oh, and if you're here from Litecoin, Dogecoin, Bells, or any other merge-mined PoW community, come say hi!
I'll send you some $PEP for a Pepecoin infographic. 👇
No clickbait
People are visual. We need high quality, eye-catching infographics. If it's good enough, I'll send you some $PEP.
If it looks clean, easy to read, and something you'd actually stop scrolling for, that's exactly what we're looking for
I just use ChatGPT. It's all about a good prompt and adding frog graphics or logo.
Making graphics has never been easier, so give it a try 🐸
