Giving equity or some sort of profit sharing to employees?

Has anyone done this before? Context, I'm thinking about opening a cafe (as LLC), and I'm thinking of ways to give equity or some sort of profit sharing to employees tied to store performance.

Looking for thoughts and experiences.

Thank you!

EDIT:

Okay, definitely not going equity route given its complexities. I'm leaning towards going bonus route. For those of you who have a bonus structure, what percentage / what does that kinda look like?

Thoughts on working where the espresso machine is on the back bar?

On paper, it sounds very not ideal since you have to constantly do a turn to deliver the drink.

Is it as bad as it seems, or is it... doable in a medium-ish paced cafe?

I like the idea of not having the machine block the view from the front-bar (leaving it available for pourovers), but the workflow doesn't sound ideal at all.

Actually... typing it out I think I have my answer. But I'd still be curious to hear other people's thoughts.

Thank you!

Looking for barista thoughts on having a bathroom that's not exclusive to you

I'm currently looking around at spaces, and there's one space that stands out to me.

However, the bathroom (both for staff/other tenants) won't be exclusive to us. It'll be shared across other tenants.

I'd be curious to hear about people's thoughts for spaces that have a similar situation. After working in one, would you pay more to have an exclusive (to your shop) bathroom?

I would guess the choice comes with what the level of upkeep if it was shared (my guess... would be not great -- I'd be surprised if it was high).

Thanks!

Cafe buildout for a white box space (NYC)

Hello!

I'm wondering if any of you built out a cafe from a white box space? And if so, what TI were you able to get?

I'm considering this option, but I'm worried about the costs that come with setting up all the infrastructure (plumbing / electrical) of the space.

I'm hoping to read that there's flexibility in the LL giving more than usual TI or even helping bringing the plumbing/electrical to where we'd want it.

Context about the space:

  • 700+ square foot (we can choose)
  • No kitchen needs -- just coffee bar
  • We'd be activating the area. This isn't a high-demand/traffic location.

Thank you!

Help understanding costs related to building out from a white box space - NYC

I hope this is okay. I'm not sure which subreddit to post my question, so let me know if there's another place that's better to post.

I'm asking as someone looking to build out a space. The space I'm looking at is a white box, and I'm told the landlord will bring utilities to the demising walls. I'm going to try and ask for more.

I'm reading that coming at a space from a white box is good in that you don't have to deal with any unknowns from the prior tenant.

However, I'm also understanding that it's going to cost more.

Here's my question -- how much... more would this be? And how else should I be thinking about the tradeoffs of this vs something more built out (but potentially with issues)?

Context about the buildout:

  • 700 to 900 sq foot
  • Location will be a cafe (no food, just coffee bar)
  • Outlets will be around the corner

Thanks so much!
