What are these marks on my pillowcases?

Does this happen to anybody else? It’s not mascara, I’m thinking it’s something in the washing machine or dryer. But I only noticed it on pillowcases and sheets. Any ideas out there?

Nice Quiet Home, 1 hour to NYC

We have 2 young, well behaved dogs and we are comfortable leaving them for 4 hours, 5 at the absolute most (and only when bookended by hour long walks). Our place is quiet, clean and comfortable, near parks and a 10 minute walk to a lovely town center. There are live music venues, movies and shopping within easy reach and hiking trails and beaches a short drive away.

But here’s the thing: We are also a 10 minute walk to the train that takes you to New York. Our town is nice enough but the real attraction is of course NYC and all it offers. We are essentially in a bedroom community of the City, just an hour away. But, with the commute times to and from the City (about 2.5 hours), a sitter really couldn’t take advantage of our proximity to the City, they would be gone too long.

So, sitters I’d like to hear from you. Would you be interested in a nice sit that’s close to the City even though you can’t really visit the City for the day?? Thanks in advance for your insights!

Vintage Summer Cottage Renovation

We're renovating a tiny, single story 1870s fish camp and we want to utilize the existing vintage tub and upper kitchen cabinet fronts. This floor plan is almost the same as it is now except we broke out the toilet to it's own space, and added an outdoor shower. This is a 3 season space, to be used for guests April - November. I know this floor plan is rough — any thoughts to make it better?

Anyone add flange trim to existing duvet cover?

I made a huge mistake and went to a mattress chain and bought a mattress that is 16" plus deep. It's super comfy but hard to move, needs special fitted sheets and no standard duvet covers the mattress.

It always looks sloppy since half of the uncovered mattress is always visible because the duvet cover is not wide enough. It also leads to wrestling matches at night since the duvet is too skimpy. I've looked into giant duvets and custom covers, but I like the design of what I have.

So — my question is — has anyone successfully added a 3" or 4" flange trim on their existing duvet cover? I know the duvet itself won't fill the new trim, but at least it will now cover the mattress and look better.

from application to acceptance — how long?

Apologies if this has been addressed recently. Just curious how long it usually takes from the time a sitter applies to it being confirmed by a homeowner.

How many messages back and forth? How often is there a video meeting ahead of time?

As a homeowner, I don't want to string anyone along, but I need a few days at least to sort through applicants (especially if there are multiple sits open). My response time to a message is usually within 24 hours, but sometimes longer. When someone applies, I always want to provide a personal response even if its just: I'm sorting through applicants, I'll get back to you in a few days.

Obviously it depends on how soon the sit is coming up, but I'm curious how long long the whole process takes for homeowners and sitters — thanks!

We live on the lake (yes, I know we're lucky, yes I know that it is a public space) but I'm wondering about night fishing.

Even with black out curtains, the lights are so intense that they wake up everyone in the house — especially the dogs, who rightfully alerted by the lights and the noise so close to home.

And even if the lights didn't do it (imagine 3 or 4 cars with their high beams on pointed into your bedroom window)-- the expletive laced shouting just outside your window would.

Some fisherman are respectful of the hour (usually between midnight - 3am) and are quiet, others not so much. Last night they were shooting fish. With guns. Right outside our house in the middle of the night. Yes, 'fish hunting' is a thing, although why remains a mystery.

Sometimes the boaters are sloppy drunk and there are kids on board.

I'd like to hear from the night fisherman and others with similar experiences. Do your best to be respectful please.
