Does the Struthers Bicentennial Time Capsule get reopened this year, or is it meant to stay sealed until 2076? I was there 50 years ago to watch its installation, but I don't remember this important detail!

In case you wondered, the sealed capsule is inside an ingot mold, and a steel ingot sits adjacent to it.

Also, on a related note, people and communities were excited about the Bicentennial in a way that feels stunningly different from the current Semiquincentennial.

July 2nd should be a state holiday: Minnesota Heroes Day!

Not a man wavered!

On this day in 1863, during the second day of fighting near Gettysburg, the brave men of the 1st Minnesota, against overwhelming odds, successfully held the line against a Confederate advance. Of the 262 men that went into battle, only 47 walked away unharmed. 215 men were either killed or wounded, and the regiment suffered a casualty rate of 82%, the highest of any single regiment in any one battle. The regiment also lost every one of its field commanders in the assault.

In a moment where the future of the nation was in doubt, the 1st Minnesota's selfless courage preserved the Union lines and saved the Union effort at Gettysburg. We should remember their sacrifice for freedom and honor the memory of these brave soldiers.

US naturalization in 1853

I recently obtained a copy of my wife's 3rd g-grandfather's naturalization certificate, dated 22 August, 1853. I realized the date was likely close in time to my 3rd g-grandfather's certificate that I've had for some time. When I compared the two documents, I was surprised to see that the dates are identical.

The two certificates are both issued by county/state courts, one in Kentucky and the other in Pennsylvania.

Is there something more than coincidence that explains the 22 August similarity? I can't find anything suggesting that naturalization proceedings were performed on one specific day, and that seems unlikely given how the process does not seem to be at all nationalized.

Hi, all.

I saw the show last evening at the Palace Theater in St. Paul and thought it was amazing. This was my first time seeing St. Paul and the Broken Bones, but it won't be my last. Thoroughly impressed!

Question: Just before (and continuing as) the band took the stage, a pre-recorded introduction was played. We couldn't hear it very well, and so my wife and I have competing theories about what it was. If I'm correct, it's something that they're using at other shows, and if she's correct, it is something purely local to the Twin Cities area.

Can anyone tell us what we (kinda) heard?
