The significance of district 2
Post got removed before for speculating about future books, so I’m reposting as just a general observation, throughout the whole series district 2 is really commonly featured as a foil for 12/generally given some extra attention despite having no real main characters (with the exception of SOTR)
In the first book, Cato and Clove are set as the foil to the star crossed lovers, Katniss’s narration features them heavily from the first time she sees them in the reaping recap (mostly Cato) and she views Cato as her only true opponent and his death is the one that plagues both her and Peeta’s nightmares the most.
In catching fire, Brutus and Enobaria are again given a moment in the narration when Katniss watches the old games, the reaping recaps, and Brutus’s games are what Peeta is watching when she joins him in the train car before watching Haymitch’s games. Brutus is also what draws Peeta off from the lightning tree and causes him to miss the rendezvous point.
In Mockingjay, a large portion of the book is spent on Katniss’s time in 2. There’s the sequence of her and Gale there, the time spent discussing the Nut, Lyme as a victor and rebel leader, and her exchange with the miner before she gets shot on live television. It functions for me as the emotional core of the book that propels us into the endgame. 2 is literally framed as the last obstacle before bringing down the capitol, or in Katniss’s eyes killing Snow.
In ballad we explore the implications of how 2 came to be in the capitols pocket, but they certainly aren’t yet. It’s made very clear by all of the Plinths that they are not just in the capitol because of the wealth, they are so hated in 2 that they could probably never hope to go back. The video I watched (by Megan Talks on tt) argued that this could allude to a very direct betrayal by Strabo that might have changed the tide in the war significantly. Marcus makes it his hill to literally die on that he will not accept anything from Sejanus, and the 10th games kick off with his body crucified on the goal post in the arena. Sejanus functions as a foil to Coriolanus throughout the book, with S as the Lockean philosophy and C as the Hobbesian. There’s a lot more to their relationship but in the interest of keeping things somewhat concise I’ll end on the point that Coriolanus is then adopted by the Plinths and arguably learns some of his manipulation tactics he uses later from Strabo’s example.
There’s no major focus on 2 in sunrise that I recall but that could be a point of its own ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
TLDR: district 2 gets a lot of narrative attention that I don’t think people notice
