Location: Nebraska

I am the victim in a domestic violence/assault case involving a firearm that occurred in my home. The defendant has already admitted to the police that he pointed the gun at me.

My family, including my mother, has been pressuring me to lie to the court and recant my statement. I have clear proof of this pressure in text messages (where she specifically asks me to say the incident didn't happen and offers conditions if I do).

I have not yet shared these specific texts with the police. I am terrified that if I provide this evidence, it could lead to my mother being arrested for witness tampering, which is something I really want to avoid.

1. If the police or prosecutor ask for evidence regarding the incident, am I legally obligated to disclose these texts, even if I don't want to pursue charges against my mother?
   2. How can I handle this situation without causing legal harm to my mother, while still ensuring I don't get in trouble for "withholding evidence" or appearing uncooperative?
   3. Does the fact that the defendant has already confessed to the primary crime make the pressure from my mother less relevant to the prosecution?

I am working with a victim advocate, but I am feeling extremely overwhelmed and don't know how to navigate this conflict between staying safe and protecting my family. Any general advice is appreciated.

Why wouldn’t they at least clarify this was a mistake? Or why can’t Best Buy just confirm it was an error if that’s truly what it was?

It’s just weird that I find so many of these questions not being pushed harder on them as to why or even how a leak like that happens, and has this happened before? Someone should figure out whether this exact king of leak has happened in the past to something else and whether the dates were legitimately wrong or not.

The only thing I can think of why they wouldn’t say a single thing is because it’s real so there’s no reason to say it was a mistake.

But I guess we’ll see on the 18th.
