I welcomed this handsome fella into my tribe today

Hi everyone! My name is Quincy! I’m 8 years old and I got a new home today. I’m not quite sure about it yet but the nice lady who picked me over all the cute kittens today seems to be nice. She tells me that I’m adoption number 15 and that’s where my new name comes from; 15 in Spanish is quince.

I have some other furry roommates that I haven’t formally met yet because I’m a bit shy and scared. See, I didn’t have a home, but was brought in from the scary outside world in June. I was feeling pretty crummy but I’m all better now.

She tells me that I’m in my forever home now and I’m safe. I don’t know what that means yet, but this place is nice and warm and has good food!

Anyways, I’ve had a big day so I’m going to settle in under the bed and get some sleep. Hopefully tomorrow I will feel a little less scared.

I decided on the name Quincy for this handsome boy

I went to sit with “Soda Bread” (8 years old with FIV) today. Such a sweet boy! He was very welcoming of pets and purred away!

He’s definitely a bit scared of course but I’m pretty confident he will settle in fine. I don’t know if he likes cats but he didn’t have any reaction seeing a couple of the others on the other side of the gate. He’s settling into the “welcome room” until he shows signs of being more comfortable. One of my boys, Oliver, is my cat tester because his only goal in life is to have all the friends possible.

I decided on Quincy because he’s my 15th adoption and 15 in Spanish is quince 😊

Human name suggestions for this handsome guy

I am seriously considering adopting this 8 year old handsome boy. He is FIV+, and sweet but a bit shy.

I currently have 3 boys in my home & I like human names for my cats. His shelter name is Soda Bread so that’s definitely out.

My boys are Oliver, Sam and Hank
My girls are Chloe, Maya, Evelyn (Evie), Delilah and Phoebe.

Hank & Delilah are FIV+ and I lost my 18 year old FIV girl Savannah last month. I would love to honor Savannah and give a home to another FIV cat.

What would human name would you give this guy? I’m planning to go sit with him tomorrow or Friday and see if I feel he’d be a good fit in my home.

How to have conversation with Mom that she shouldn't go to Florida for winter by herself

(TLDR at bottom)

Hello! I'm looking for some suggestions on making a hard conversation a bit easier. My mom is 78. She is showing dementia signs, but is not formally diagnosed yet (waiting for referral appt & it's going to be awhile).

Background as short as I can: my dad died 9/11/25. They were married 55 yrs. My brother and I believe that mom was showing some dementia signs prior to Dad's death, however, he "hid" it from us so we had zero clue how bad she was. Since Dad's death, Mom's short term memory and executive function have spiraled downward. She forgets she just called you, I have to tell her how to get to the internet on her laptop even though she has a note pointing directly at her microsoft edge icon. You tell her to open her email and she says what's an email. She can't follow 1st grade written instructions on using her TV. Every time it rains, she stops at my brothers so he can show her how to use the windshield wipers. She forgets names, what day it is....

Anyways, she went down to her home in Florida last winter (Oct - April). She bugged the he** out of her friends calling for help with the TV, her phone, how to turn on the garden hose, telling them she was lonely when she'd just left someone's house an hour before... Everyone was very patient with her last year, but since she's been back home in Maine, several have reached out to me and told me they can't "deal with being her support system" anymore & please don't let her come down alone again. We agree she shouldn't.

I'm going to talk to her this week (my brother will be there too) and tell her how we feel. That being said she HATES the cold. She also would be miserable in her current home (she's always saying she's lonely & hasn't seen anyone in days when she just did a few hours earlier). I have found a great independent living community that doesn't have a waiting list. They have 1 BR apts available, daily activities/outings... she'd be very happy there. WE know that, convincing her of it is going to be really hard.

I was thinking of framing the community as "Timber Pines without the palm trees and big house to take care of" and that we need her to stay in case the specialist has an opening. We also know that staying in her home for the winter would be miserable for her, and we found this great place for you to try out for the winter. If you don't like it there, you can go back home" (which of course is just a ploy to get her in there.)

She's going to get very defensive, because she doesn't think anything is wrong with her. It's always something else's fault. The TV is horrid, her phone is horrid, her computer is horrid. I am 78, I do forget things sometimes..........

Any suggestions on how to go about this conversation that may lessen the anger/defensiveness? I'm NOT looking forward to doing this. Thank you if you read all of this

TLDR: Mom who doesn't think anything is wrong with her, needs to go into an independent living community & not go to Florida alone (from Maine). Struggling to figure out how to approach the subject when Florida is all she talks about.

Had to say goodbye to my Savannah girl today

I had to say goodbye to Savannah today.
She was my first senior adoption in 2019 & my first FIV cat. Sweet but also ornery girl who just wanted to stay in my room most of the time. She would always come out when people came over though. She loved people.

For an FIV cat to make it to 18 is a gift. And she was a beautiful gift.

Bye my Vannah-muffin. I will miss you so much.

I picked some of my favorite pictures of my pretty girl to share 💖

It’s a banner day for my Phoebe

I adopted Phoebe in October. She is 2 and has some health issues after being removed from a hoarding situation in July. She was covered in feces, fleas and was severely matted. She only weighed 3.8 lbs.

I asked my vet what she thought a good weight for her would be and was told 7 lbs would be perfect for her tiny frame.

Well today is the day!! She weighs 7 lbs exactly!!!

You go with your bad self Miss Phoebe 🎉🎉

Getting a semi feral to take meds in her food

I am so at a loss here & I’m sorry this is so long. I have a semi feral girl, Maya, whom i adopted 7 years ago at age 1. She’s terrified of human touch.

I cannot pet her. I cannot pick her up. Which obviously means I also cannot give medicine to her the normal way.

She is having recurring bladder infections. 3 weeks ago I had to “trap” her in a small wire dog kennel (which took 3 days of throwing treats into it to try getting her to walk in) & drive over an hour to an emergency vet so she could be seen. She was given Convenia injection and some pain meds.

She improved for a couple weeks but last week began going to the litter box constantly again. Spoke to my regular vet Thursday who suggested trying gabapentin for the pain/inflammation & anxiety in her food along with giving her urinary wet cat food. I agreed to try as capturing her again was going to take awhile and I don’t want her in pain. I thought I’d be able to get her to take it as she is very food motivated.

She hates the hills urinary food, so I tried using her regular canned food with the gaba in it. She will take a couple of bites and the minute she tastes the gaba she is done.

I have tried every combination I can think of. Lickable treats in with the food, every flavor of canned food, with extra water stirred in, cold, heated up. Different times of day…. Nothing is working.

I have 8 others so I can’t pick up everyone’s food waiting for her to eat her food with the gaba in it, she ends up eventually walking to another dish and eating out of that one.

This tells me she can definitely tell her dish has meds in it.

I just don’t know what to do to help her. I fear that she’s in so much pain and she won’t let me help her. If I can’t get these meds in her, I can’t let her suffer either and that is breaking my heart to have these thoughts.

I am trying so hard to not spiral into the worst decision but I’m feeling so defeated right now.

Anyone have any suggestions or tips to get a very suspicious, fickle but beautiful girl to take her meds?

This is my beautiful Phoebe. She’s 2 and an absolute menace. An adorable menace but still a menace.

I adopted her in October. She was only 3.8 lbs. and was completely shaved. She’d been removed from a hoarding situation and was covered in fleas, feces and mats. We’re dealing with IBS, I’m assuming from her spending her whole life without proper care.

She is such a happy girl, always playing and chirping at everything.

I call her a menace because she’s a bit of a jerk sometimes about taking her prednisone.

When I do call her menace, she just looks at me, flips her tail up and just runs off to play 🤣😂

Happy 8th birthday & 7th adoptiversary to my beautiful Maya

Maya is my semi feral girl. For her birthday, I always give her the gift of not trying to pet her.

Hey there. I’m just curious how many others have dealt with lingering stomatitis issues after all teeth have been removed.

Delilah had to go to the vet today because she wasn’t feeling well. She has a ridiculously expressive face (see picture 2) so I know when she isn’t feeling well.

Anyways, bloodwork was fine and no obvious pain source. Vet said her gums were inflamed. She came home with some fluids and a steroid shot. If she hasn’t perked up by tomorrow, her “sister” Phoebe is going to share her prednisone for a few days. She did eat a little dinner tonight so that’s a good sign.

I guess I was mistakenly under the impression that stomatitis resolves with tooth extraction. She had her remaining 3 teeth pulled last November and has been a very happy girl since until yesterday. She is also FIV+ which likely plays a role in her mouth still giving her trouble?
