VLC 4 regressions

I recently switched to VLC 4 (from 3) on Linux and it is quite a change, and buggy with playback (with menus) of DVD ISO files.

I had not been updating it for a period of about 2 years, and not really keeping up with the news of its development. What's the story with VLC 4? Is it a major refactoring or a migration to some new framework? What explains how different it looks, and the sudden influx of bugs in what used to be very stable playback?

updated from 6.4.3160.47 to 8.0.4033.46, crashes restoring session

I updated from 6.4.3160.47 to 8.0.4033.46 as part of a very long-delayed system update (I'm running Linux), and now Vivaldi crashes when restoring my browser session.

I have a full system backup from before the update but it will be an enormous pain to restore the OS just so I can run the older Vivaldi. I can access files from the backup easily though, including my Vivaldi profile. However I do not have an explicitly saved tab session, only the active session which Vivaldi saves automatically when closed.

This session is everything I have been working on for years, I simply must regain access to it.

Here's the output when running vivaldi from the console and it crashes:

Updating after 1+ year, stuck on blocked EAPI 9 packages

I am trying to emerge --emptytree @world (after a compiler upgrade) but all kdecore-meta and plasma-meta ebuilds require EAPI 9, but I currently have portage-3.0.61-r1 which only supports EAPI 8.

I tried updating portage alone with emerge -1 portage, but that also runs into conflicts. To further complicate matters, I also currently have PYTHON_TARGET and PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET set to Python 3.13 because it seems some packages don't yet support 3.14.

emerge --emptytree @system isn't conflict-free either.

Haven't been able to ping gnu.org (209.51.188.116) for days. Routing issue?

Before you ask, I already checked, it's not DNS! 😄

gnu.org currently resolves to 209.51.188.116, and has been that IP for at least the past few days. I cannot load any gnu.org website nor ping that IP from any machine in my LAN, with the exception of one machine which is using a VPN. I have tried multiple computers in my LAN, spanning different OSes, even my phone on wifi, none of them work.

None of the usual down detection websites report gnu.org being down. Everyone I've asked (who are on different networks) is able to successfully ping gnu.org, much like my machine using a VPN. Also they all resolve gnu.org to 209.51.188.116 which is why I don't think it's a DNS issue.

I've tried releasing+refreshing my router's WAN DHCP lease but Verizon just gave me back the same WAN IP anyway.

I tried a traceroute which reached FREE-SOFTWA.dcr03.bsn04.twdx.net (185.134.180.210) on the 8th hop then timed out after that having never reached gnu.org. A friend (in a different US state) is able to reach gnu.org just fine, and his traceroute went through that same twdx.net router, but his next and final hop was to gnu.org.

I found this debugging resource from Towardex (owner of that twdx.net router), and from there traceroute times out in the same place as for me, but ping to 209.51.188.116 works fine 🤷‍♂️

Cannot ping certain Internet IP from my LAN, but it seems to be just me, not sure how to debug

Before you ask, I already checked, it's not DNS! 😄

gnu.org currently resolves to 209.51.188.116, and has been that IP for at least the past several hours. I cannot load any gnu.org website nor ping that IP from any machine in my LAN (behind my pfSense router), with the exception of one host which pfSense is routing through an OpenVPN client. I have tried multiple computers in my LAN, spanning different OSes, even my phone on wifi, none of them work.

None of the usual down detection websites report gnu.org being down. Everyone I've asked (who are on different networks) is able to ping that IP.

There is no mention of that IP in my firewall logs, nor in the bogons table. I've tried resetting the firewall state. I've tried releasing my WAN DHCP lease and reobtaining it (but my ISP just gave me back the same WAN IP anyway, even with "Relinquish lease" checked).

I could try rebooting my router, but I really want to learn what the problem is here so I can diagnose this in the future and I'm afraid if the reboot fixes it I'll never learn what the problem was.
