In VLC, you can enable sharpening:

Window -> Video Effects -> Sharpen -> Sigma and there's a slider scale.

This makes older anime/cartoons/animation look amazing, like it's been AI upscaled without the insane CPU overheard.

I'd like to include this sort of sharpening in some of my transcodes.

My question is: what method of sharpening does VLC use for this?

I want to duplicate it, but I'm not sure what filters/programs/apps would do the same thing.

New pc, never had this issue before, at least not this specific.

Now and again, videos simply just freeze during playback. The UI/program is responsive enough that I can open settings, click things, can press(or use hotkeys) for stop, pause, etc, can fullscreen/windowed, etc. IE the program itself seems to work fine, just video is frozen at the spot it locked up at(I can click to go to other section of video but it won't play until I close and restart video)

Does not lock up again at the same spot (if it even does) -seems random WHEN it does.

Does not seem to matter what drive (external or internal, SSD, M.2, HDD, etc) and does not seem to really matter WHAT video is playing either. I have not been able to match it to another activity - At first assumed was due to it trying to play on the drive I was also running torrents, and that the drive somehow was at it's read/write limit, but moving videos to another drive and playing from there still results in the same issue...

And ransom protection (or controlled folder access) is also not the cause either since even when I disabled or enabled it, I still had it happen.

So hoping someone has a possible fix (with the above) - again, is not like other freezes I've noticed (where u sometimes get video clipping out due to drive at limit, with artifacts in video till it clears up, etc) this is a simple hard freeze(as if u paused video) but it will NOT start up again until u close vlc (or can even 'fix' it by just 'opening' the same video again in current player window)

One thing that is notable about this when it happens, is the 'continue playback ' option does NOT appear when this happens (upon starting video again). Unsure if that helps key into the issue or not...

I came across a ton of burnt CDs my dad did when I was a kid.

The series on the disc has the menu and extras, as if it's legitimate, but the audio selection in VLC is different than the DVD menu setting.

So the problem is:

DVD menu shows English and Japanese audio. Changing to Japanese from there does nothing, it still plays in English.

The VLC audio selection only shows track 1 which is English.

I don't know if how my dad burned the CD affects wheather or not I can add the Japanese audio (which I've already extracted from a different source) but I'd like to use the CDs to watch instead of watching the show online, if possible.

I'm on a Lenovo laptop and I've heard a lot of good things about VLC, so wanted to give it a try. I don't know why, but it takes much longer to open even the smallest video files, compared to the default Media Player. Also, whenever I resume the video after pausing there is no sound for about a second, which is very annoying. Why?

EDIT: Excluding the VLC installation folder from Windows Security scan fixed the problem! Thanks u/ian1035nr!

I've been starting to use VLC for ripping TV series to my Drive, im not that concerned with quality because they are just for my own personal playback. I've had some success where I've been able to port episodes directly into mp4. But any time there is a problem with the disk in any way it ruins the conversion in one way or another. I scanned this reddit a bit looking for fixes but it seems like the general consensus is that if i want to rip dvds i should just use another program because it would make it far easier. I'm willing to do this but i really just wanted to know should i give up on VLC or are there proper avenues of troubleshooting to clear the issues that i run into?

I have been downloading a multiple tv series through utorrent but i kept getting a greeny filter when trying to waych !! What is that ?

Title gets handed from Tivimate to VLC , am able to search and download the Subtitles. But when I play the video, I don't see the subtitles display on the video.

How can I fix this?

I've been using VLC for years. I updated to the latest version a few months ago and it's become unusable. What used to be a lightweight media player now hogs half the ram on my pc. Where I used to be able to drag and drop a new file, it now stutters and loops the same 4 frames. I can't select multiple files to add to playlist. Opening a file now opens an application that lists the playlist, while playlists don't work, and it takes a minute for the actual file to load when it used to be instant. If I go fullscreen, it goes open in a random monitor, goes black, or opens over every application and can't be interacted with, wont let me right click, won't let me ctrl+h to see the timeline, and so on. When I scroll to change volume, it's not a continuous process but in increments of 5% and I have to stop scrolling and start again if I want to change it by more than 5%.

I don't know if my settings are off, or I'm using the wrong windows, or I installed it wrong, but it feels like bloatware. I'd rather use the built in Windows Photos than VLC 3 at this point. I've had to downgrade to a previous version just so my pc doesn't die from playing an MP4. Does anyone have a solution, or has this program gone to the dogs?

Or subtitles!! The interface for cranked up gas zero options to add closed captioning or subtitles. And with the audio mix quality on some of these lower budget movies it’s really hard to understand what anyone is saying.

Few comments off the bat:
- I preferred the orange background app icon over white
- there’s a vlc icon that shows at start of video. It’s supposed to be for the initial buffer but especially when the video is locally saved and able to start playing without delay, all it does is obfuscate the video and hence is unnecessary/distracting
- I’m also unable to cast any videos
- many times if I’m viewing a video on loop the 2nd or 3rd iteration loses the picture and only does sound. Sometimes it even shows the audio note to double down that it’s video only. If I remain in the app, the next loop usually recovers the video so this is most common when I’m multitasking. I see this with the MiniPlayer most especially as almost every time the little preview is not shown
- you can swipe down to minimize the video. Should there not be an X on the mini player or a way to swipe away to close it?
- quite a few times the app has frozen on the browse tab. It never actually gets to loading that tab but it freezes as it is moved there on the bottom bar
