Here’s an example:
Someone likes to reflect on life but never reads philosophical books; yet they reach many conclusions just as famous philosophers did.
Another person is interested in people; they may not know everything about psychology and may not know the technical terms to describe behavior, but they understand exactly what’s going on inside other people and can analyze it perfectly.
I've often found myself not knowing where to start, so I just sat there and didn't get anything done. In my head, I’d go over the to-do list again and again, trying to prioritize, analyze, and so on—in the end, I’d have maybe three new plans but no results.
Now I do it this way: I briefly think about a few things I need to do, and as soon as the thought “wash dishes” flashes through my mind, I get up right then and there and go to the sink—before I can even think, “I’d rather do something else.”
That makes it much easier for me to get started, and sometimes it motivates me so much that I do a second or third dish right away.
At first, it annoyed me because I realized that it’s much better for my body to “just do something” instead of making some super-clever plans, but I’ve gotten used to it.
I don’t know if this helps anyone, but it worked for me.
I’m a very picky eater and love fast food and, sometimes, sweets.
Most of the time, it went like this:
When you want to change your eating habits, you come up with this amazing, super healthy meal plan.
In the morning, a great bowl of cereal that takes 30 minutes to put together—fresh fruit and all that stuff. For lunch, a mix of the healthiest vegetables, and so on.
After 3 days, you get cravings and drive to Burger King...
So try doing this instead:
Even if you’re not really into vegetables or fruit, maybe there are 1 or 2 things you like. Focus on those first. If it helps, think of it as a kind of medicine you have to take every day to feel better.
Or cheat a little:
A vegetable you find “pretty okay”—just take that greasy cream sauce you would’ve eaten anyway and pour it over the broccoli.
Of course, this isn’t an ideal solution, but it’s a start. You might get used to it and gradually want to eat more of it.
If you’re lucky, your body will feel better afterward and you’ll be motivated.
For example, you might want to exercise more and go outside when you feel better or look better (your hair shines more or your skin looks healthier).
Plus, it's a great thing to take a good dump.
