I traded this 72” x 72” charcoal painting/drawing for an expensive Philippe Patek watch way back in 1989. I lost the watch on a roadtrip two weeks later, but the owner still has this piece called, “THE WORKER”.
5 Valuable Lessons I’ve Learned About Galleries
and their owners over the past 35 years:
1. If they have a “favorite” artist in their stable, stay away. It will only frustrate you and make you feel unworthy of their time and effort. Which is, of course, complete bullshit.
2. If they won’t offer you a Solo Exhibit every 18 months WITH A FULL RUN OF THE GALLERY’S WALL SPACE… Pass. When they insist they have other artists to sell or represent as well, that of course, is complete bullshit. Each of their artists should be the center of the universe on a regular basis. See #1 above as a tripwire.
3. If their gallery space looks like a farmer’s market on a Saturday morning… Pass. Trying to appeal to everyone makes no one special. A jam-packed and cluttered gallery reads: “Desperate! Please buy SOMETHING!”.
4. If they do not pay you in a timely manner after EVERY sale… Pass. They should be fluid enough to pay you your hard-earned 1/2 cut within two weeks maximum of the sale. This is one of the most important behaviors to watch for, fellow artistes. Do not accept excuses because what are excuses in the end..? That’s right: Bullshit.
5. Think Small. I know it’s a classic VW ad copy line, but it applies here as well. A gallery with more than 18 artists in its stable is no more than a puppy mill. Pass. Again, you want, need, and so deserve a Solo Exhibit every 18 months. Guess what a gallery with a maximum of 18 artists affords everyone..? Correct. A healthy, happy relationship - devoid of any bullshit.
Hit me up for any more advice or insights. I’ve shown in NYC, Miami, Chicago, LA, London, Berlin and Denmark. Plus a few one-horse towns in between. I’ve witnessed a few things that might help you on your path forward. Peace, Chuck Hipsher.
