Navy Federal v. Chase
EDIT - PLEASE limit comments to specific thoughts about Navy Fed and Chase. I have already looked at other local banks/credit unions. Thank you.
Thinking about switching from our current institution due to unhappiness with current customer service. I have reviewed many posts here and on other blogs and narrowed down the choice to Navy Federal and Chase.
Navy Federal because everyone raves about their customer service, but their closest physical branch to us right now is about 100 miles away. Not sure if we need it but there have been times when I wish I could have walked in to our current bank to get a matter resolved.
Chase because they have seem to have a good reputation with "military" department/perks and physical branches everywhere in the US (we are retired and unlikely to ever be overseas except on vacation), but we are unsure if the supposed military perks are worth it. This would be mostly for checking/savings and maybe credit cards at this point. We will be researching home and auto insurance as well but will still be including other dedicated companies like State Farm for those. We don't need a mortgage company at present.
Chase would also be more convenient because we still have a joint account for our young adult son who lives in another city and may be moving again in the future for grad school. He does better with in person servicing when there's an issue. But he should qualify for membership in Navy Federal, too, as the child of a retired military person.
Thanks in advance for any specific input you all have.
