In Canton (Guangzhou), Many Children Refuse to Learn Cantonese |

English version is at the end of this post.

English Version:

A few days ago, there was a post where the general consensus seemed to be that parents just aren't teaching Cantonese at home.

In reality, it is far from that simple.

Most users in this sub live in English-speaking environments, so it’s understandable why you’d think that way. But Guangzhou is the exact opposite—it is inherently a Cantonese-speaking region with a natural linguistic environment. When the phenomenon of "Guangzhou locals not knowing how to speak Cantonese" still occurs under these conditions, the responsibility clearly doesn’t lie solely with the parents.

I have personally witnessed these two scenarios on the streets of Guangzhou:

  1. A middle-aged woman was walking down the street with her daughter and her mother. The daughter looked to be about kindergarten age. The conversation between the two adults was in Cantonese. However, the little girl demanded in Mandarin that they switch to Mandarin because she couldn't understand Cantonese. The middle-aged woman replied to her in Mandarin: "If you don't understand, you have to learn. Learn to understand it."
  2. Outside a school gate, the communication between parents and students was bizarre: the parents spoke Cantonese, while the students replied in Mandarin. If an acquaintance asked why the student wasn't speaking Cantonese, they would most likely get this response: "The school requires Mandarin; only civilized people speak Mandarin."

The slogan "Speak Mandarin, Be a Civilized Person" has existed for decades. It is one of the CCP's brainwashing tactics to promote Mandarin, drummed into kids' heads starting from kindergarten. The subtext of this slogan is that "those who speak local languages (Cantonese) are uncivilized," which carries an obvious discriminatory undertone. In the two to three years before Jiang Zemin stepped down, the CCP even tightened accompanying measures, punishing students who spoke Cantonese at school. The school has fully adopted Mandarin as the medium of instruction and communication.

To make matters worse, due to the massive influx of the Mandarin-speaking population (commonly referred to as "demographic dilution" or "population washing"), Guangzhou locals are actually being discriminated against and abused just for speaking Cantonese. "Mandarin Police" are everywhere The maid has outgrown the mistress

Under this kind of brainwashing and suppression, a vast number of students are unwilling to learning Cantonese, refuse to learn Cantonese.

Media outlets reported years ago that primary school students in Guangzhou openly stated they "don't want to learn Cantonese." In this environment, even if parents want to teach, they simply can't.

Media Report and article Cited Below (WeChat):

"I'm a Guangzhou local resident, I don't speak Cantonese, and I don't want to learn."

>Remember last year, a short video titled "I am a Guangzhou local resident, but I don't speak Cantonese" went viral on the WeChat Moments of Guangzhou locals?

>On camera, this Post-00s primary school student said: "I am a Guangzhou local resident, but I don't speak Cantonese."

>Honestly, not speaking Cantonese at that age wouldn't be a huge issue, as long as you spend some time learning and practicing it.

>However, when the reporter asked, "Do you want to learn Cantonese?" her reply was: "Not really, it just sounds like gibberish."

>This answer brought me nothing but heartbreak: Is the new generation of Guangzhou locals really losing their ability to speak Cantonese?

>A previous online survey on the "Proportion of People Aged 6-20 Who Can Fluently Use Dialects" revealed that about 30% of the population already cannot speak Cantonese.

"Guangzhou Locals in Guangzhou, Stripped of Their Cantonese Rights: Mother Tongue Turned to Silence"

>There are even instances where people speaking Cantonese in Guangzhou are accused of "showing off superiority" or "discriminating against outsiders."

>Good grief! We Guangzhou natives already have such a low profile. What did we do wrong by speaking Cantonese? That is our mother tongue that we grew up speaking! How did it suddenly become "xenophobic"?

Wuhan’s Huoshenshan & Leishenshan: How China used Taoist symbolism to “attack” the COVID lung disease (metal)

In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic struck Wuhan. As the nation rallied to support the city against time, two hospitals rose at a miraculous pace—Huoshenshan (Fire God Mountain) and Leishenshan (Thunder God Mountain). Their names were no random choice, but a cosmic formation rooted in traditional Chinese culture, Taoist philosophy, and the Five Elements.

I. Five Elements Control: Lung Disease Belongs to Metal; Fire & Thunder Subdue It

In traditional Chinese medicine and the Five Elements framework, the lungs correspond to Metal. The pandemic attacked the lungs, meaning "Metal" was afflicted by evil qi.

Among the Five Elements relationships, Fire restricts Metal—the most direct countermeasure. Thus, the first hospital was named Huoshenshan: invoking the Fire God’s power to melt Metal with fierce fire, suppressing the disease at its source.

Yet fire alone needs constant fuel. Just two days later, the second hospital, Leishenshan, was built. Thunder corresponds to the Zhen trigram in the Bagua, with the Five Element attribute of Wood. Wood generates fire—Leishenshan was designed to fuel Huoshenshan, forming a chain: Wood generates Fire, Fire restricts Metal. This perpetual cycle of wood feeding fire sustained unbroken energy to suppress the epidemic.

II. Naming Significance: Taoist Deities & Plague-Dispelling Missions

• Huoshenshan: The Fire God in Taoism refers to the Fire Virtue Star Lord or Zhu Rong, ruler of southern fire, with the power to burn evil and dispel filth. Naming the hospital after the Fire God summoned pure yang fire from heaven and earth to incinerate the plague.

• Leishenshan: The Thunder God is honored in Taoism as the Jade Emperor of Universal Salvation Through Thunder, commanding 36 thunder marshals. He governs fortune and disaster, balances all things, and specializes in punishing evil and dispelling plagues. A thunderclap terrifies all evil. Leishenshan not only fueled Huoshenshan but also deterred the disease with thunder’s might.

Together, the two hospitals—one fire, one thunder; one restricting, one generating—worked in perfect harmony.

III. Logo Design: Modern Visual Talismans

The logos of the two hospitals are far more than simple graphics—they are carefully crafted Taoist visual talismans.

Huoshenshan Hospital Logo

• Center: Gourd: A key Taoist ritual vessel for trapping evil, suppressing misfortune, and attracting blessings. It symbolizes containing plague qi and dispelling the disease.

• Middle Layer: Bagua Diagram: The eight trigrams suppress evil, balance yin and yang, and stabilize cosmic energy.

• Outer Layer: Flame Patterns: Reinforce the "Fire restricts Metal" theme, with raging flames encircling all evil, leaving no escape.

The circular logo, layered like a condensed plague-dispelling formation.

Leishenshan Hospital Logo

• Center: Bold "Lei" (Thunder) Character: Stroke like lightning, directly invoking the Thunder God’s presence.

• Base: Lotus Flower: Symbolizes the Supreme Lord of Deliverance in Taoism, representing life cycles and salvation for the deceased. During the pandemic, it prayed for the living’s recovery and comfort for the departed.

The two logos—one dynamic, one tranquil; one firm, one gentle—formed an invisible energy barrier.

IV. Location Feng Shui: 24 Mountains & Bagua Positioning

In feng shui, directions align with the Five Elements and Bagua. The hospitals’ locations held hidden meaning:

• Huoshenshan Hospital: Situated in southwestern Wuhan. In the 24 Mountains system, the southwest includes Wei, Kun, and Shen mountains; Shen belongs to Geng Metal. Placing Huoshenshan in the Metal direction directly used fire to restrict metal, targeting the lung disease precisely.

• Leishenshan Hospital: Built in the due south. The south corresponds to the Li trigram, with the Five Element attribute of Fire. Locating Leishenshan in the fire direction strengthened the "Wood generates Fire, Fire supports Earth" pattern, amplifying thunder (wood) to fuel fire endlessly.

The two sites—one restricting, one generating—formed a strategic alliance, drawing an invisible plague-subduing formation across Wuhan.

V. Hexagram Synthesis: Fire Over Thunder (Biting Through) – Punish Evils, Restore Order

Combining the trigrams: Li (Fire) above, Zhen (Thunder) below forms the Shì Kè (Biting Through) hexagram. "Biting through" means crushing obstacles with force, resolving conflicts.

The I Ching · Image Commentary states: "Thunder and lightning form Biting Through. The ancient kings, in accordance with this, framed their penalties with intelligence, and promulgated their laws." This aligns perfectly with the pandemic’s decisive isolation, prevention, and treatment measures—using thunder’s speed and fire’s might to cut transmission chains and conquer the disease.

The Fire Over Thunder hexagram foreshadowed the battle’s approach and confirmed its outcome: decisive intervention leads to victory.

VI. Conclusion

Huoshenshan and Leishenshan are no ordinary temporary hospitals. They represent the collective subconscious expression of traditional Chinese culture in crisis, a perfect fusion of Taoist wisdom and modern emergency engineering. From naming and logo design to location selection, every detail embodies the ancient philosophy of "harmony between heaven and man" and "Five Elements balance".

Following nature’s way, harnessing the Five Elements, using fire to restrict metal and thunder to fuel fire—uniting as one to fight the pandemic.
