I have been thinking about this recently as I have been doing research about Japanese clans, Feudal Japan, and their shogunate systems for work on a piece of fiction I am doing and I could not help but think about Gojo x Geto, specifically around IF in an alternative universe, Geto never defected and Gojo x Geto actually got together romantically…what would that ACTUALLY look like in canon? What would Jujutsu Society think and react to this?

As we all know, Gojo and Geto are not ordinary sorcerers. They are two special grades whose loyalty to each other could become (actually scratch that, ABSOLUTELY WOULD BE) more important than their loyalty to the institutions around them. I think THIS fact would be the primary driving fear and focus for some.

1. Japanese social norms would probably make them private, not necessarily closeted.
Modern Japanese attitudes toward same-sex relationships are more complex than simply “accepting” or “unaccepting,” but there is still a strong cultural distinction between private and public life.

I feel as if that fits Gojo and Geto well. Geto is naturally private and controlled, while Gojo is socially bold but surprisingly guarded about things that genuinely matter to him. I do not think they would feel obligated to formally announce their relationship to Jujutsu Headquarters.

Their friends and students would know. Other sorcerers would eventually know. But the relationship would probably be treated as personal rather than publicly performed.
The distinction is important: privacy is not the same thing as secrecy.

I feel like Gojo in particular would likely refuse to hide Geto simply to accommodate conservative expectations.

2. The Gojo clan would probably be more concerned about succession than sexuality.
The Three Great Families derive much of their political importance from inherited cursed techniques.
Satoru possesses both Six Eyes and Limitless, an extremely rare combination that dramatically increased the Gojo clan’s influence.
Because of that, the clan would have an obvious interest in succession.

Canon never tells us that Gojo is required to marry or produce heirs, so that should not be treated as established fact. However, it is reasonable to assume that a hereditary clan would care about whether its most valuable inherited techniques continue.

A permanent relationship with Geto could therefore create tension because Satoru would be making decisions about his private life without prioritizing clan interests.

Additionally, Six Eyes and Limitless are hereditary to the Gojo gene. We do not have canon evidence to stipulate that this means Satoru Gojo’s line in the family tree. I can see an argument made around the fact that the Limitless technique and Six Eyes trait could still be born in an adjacent tree line of Satoru Gojo’s versus directly from any direct descendants of his that would be made through a heterosexual marriage (Gojo’s parents were regular, low-level sorcerers within the clan without any special power or influence prior to his birth).

This does not automatically mean acceptance. Optics still matter greatly. I can see members of the clan showcasing the need for more concentration of power and possibly promoting direct descendants from Satoru himself because of his superior strength and power (bloodline politics at play at the most extreme).

However, even in the manga, Gojo does not have any children and makes Yuta his heir so who is to say that he cannot do the same here? (Yuta is a descendant of the same ancestor of the clan and has IMMENSE power so I see this still playing out in this way unless other clan politics come into play).

3. The Zen’in clan would probably react the most negatively.
The Zen’in clan is the clearest example of how rigid jujutsu clan culture can become.
Their treatment of Maki, Mai, and Toji shows how heavily they value cursed techniques, traditional hierarchy, and gender roles. Naoya’s behavior also makes the misogyny within the clan explicit.

For that reason, certain Zen’in members would probably view Gojo and Geto’s relationship as a rejection of traditional expectations.

Geto himself would also bother them.
He comes from outside the major sorcerer families yet develops an exceptionally powerful technique and reaches special-grade status independently.

For a clan obsessed with hereditary prestige, Geto represents proof that extraordinary power does not necessarily belong to elite bloodlines.

The fact that Satoru Gojo then chooses him as his closest personal partner would make that even more politically irritating. I can honestly see Naoya making some comments about it, but again, what are they really going to do?

4. The Kamo clan would probably react more strategically.
The Kamo family appears deeply concerned with inheritance and legitimacy.

Noritoshi Kamo’s position demonstrates this clearly. Despite the circumstances of his birth, inheriting Blood Manipulation makes him valuable enough to become central to the family’s succession plans.
Their reaction to Gojo and Geto would therefore probably be less openly hostile than the Zen’in response.

They would be more concerned with what the relationship means for succession, inheritance, and the future political position of the Gojo clan.
The relationship would be treated as a structural issue rather than simply a personal one.

5. The higher-ups would see the relationship primarily as a concentration of power.
This would be the largest institutional concern.
Gojo is already extremely difficult for Jujutsu Headquarters to control. His power makes direct coercion almost impossible, and he openly disagrees with many of the conservative values of jujutsu leadership.

Geto presents a separate problem because Cursed Spirit Manipulation allows him to accumulate and deploy enormous numbers of curses. Together, they would represent a significant concentration of independent military power.

But Geto’s influence over Gojo may be even more important than his technique. Canon shows that Gojo listens to Geto in situations where almost nobody else can influence him. After Riko’s death, Gojo considers killing the members of the Star Religious Group, and Geto is the person who talks him out of it.

That means the higher-ups would have to confront an uncomfortable reality:
one of the strongest influences on Satoru Gojo is another special-grade sorcerer.

A few questions come into play for HQ:
- How confident are the higher-ups in their influence and control over Geto?
-What does direct and indirect influence look like?
-How does their romantic relationship BENEFIT the institution? Do the benefits outweigh the costs in their eyes?

It is always about institutional ownership and control. They are their STRONGEST weapons in their grand war - will their weapons stay in line?

If that relationship becomes romantic and permanent, their political loyalty to each other becomes even harder to separate.

6. The higher-ups would probably try to manage the relationship rather than openly oppose it.
Directly ordering Gojo to end the relationship would accomplish very little. Instead, institutional pressure would probably be subtler.

They could assign Gojo and Geto to different missions, increase surveillance, place additional responsibilities on Gojo through clan politics, or attempt to prevent them from operating as a permanent unit.

The goal would not necessarily be to destroy the relationship.
It would be to prevent Gojo and Geto from becoming an independent political faction.

If both men decided together that they no longer recognized the authority of Jujutsu Headquarters, the institution would have very limited ability to force their compliance.

Alternatively, I honestly CAN SEE the higher-ups also trying something sneaky and maybe trying to kill Geto or seriously harm or remove him. Maybe that’s going too far but I don’t think it is outside of the realm of possibility for them.

7. Shoko would probably have the least complicated personal reaction.
Shoko knew both of them before they became politically significant figures.
She witnessed their teenage friendship, their competitiveness, their dependence on one another, and the way Geto could influence Gojo.
Because of that, I doubt the relationship itself would surprise or disturb her very much.

Her concern would probably be whether the relationship was healthy.

Shoko occupies an unusual position because she understands Satoru and Suguru as separate individuals rather than simply as “the strongest.”
If they became increasingly codependent or began reinforcing each other’s worst tendencies, she would be one of the few people personally close enough to recognize it.

8. Yuji and Nobara would probably treat it as relatively normal.
Their generation is much less invested in the traditions of the Three Great Families.
Yuji generally judges people according to their actions rather than social convention, so I doubt Gojo having a male partner would matter much to him.
Nobara would probably be more interested in the interpersonal dynamics of the relationship than the fact that it is between two men.

Neither has much reason to care about preserving traditional clan structures, which immediately separates their reaction from that of the older leadership.

9. Megumi’s reaction would depend heavily on when the relationship began.
If Geto never defects, he could potentially remain in Gojo’s life during the period when Gojo becomes responsible for Megumi.
That creates the possibility that Geto would be part of Megumi’s upbringing.

In that scenario, Gojo and Geto’s relationship would not necessarily feel unusual to Megumi at all. It would simply be part of the family structure he grew up around.

Megumi’s connection to the Zen’in clan would also make him particularly aware of how damaging hereditary clan politics can be.

He would therefore have little reason to sympathize with Zen’in objections to Gojo’s relationship.

10. Maki would probably understand the clan politics better than most students.
Maki has personally experienced what happens when the Zen’in clan determines an individual’s worth according to inherited ability and conformity to clan expectations.

Because of that, she would likely recognize that criticism of Gojo’s relationship is partly about institutional ownership.

The argument would not simply be about who Gojo loves. It would be about whether the clan believes Satoru has the right to organize his life independently of what his inherited technique represents to them.
That is a conflict Maki understands extremely well.

11. Yuta would probably understand the emotional importance of Geto’s position in Gojo’s life.
Yuta has a particularly strong understanding of how love, attachment, and cursed energy can intersect.
He also knows Gojo as someone who carries enormous responsibility while remaining emotionally isolated from most people around him.

Because of that, Yuta might recognize more quickly than the other students that Geto is significant because he knew Satoru before Satoru became defined almost entirely by the title of “the strongest.”

It also means Geto was involved in helping save Yuta in this AU.

12. The relationship would ultimately become political because of loyalty.
The central issue is not simply that two jujutsu sorcerer men are romantically involved, but more so is that Gojo and Geto already possess enormous independent power, distrust parts of the jujutsu establishment, and have demonstrated considerable influence over each other.

They are the system’s strongest assets and command their own due respect as special-grade sorcerers. If society also saw them as a permanent unit of power due to any personal connections, I would argue this would absolutely not be looked at as a positive by the higher-ups if they begin to fear loss of control or authority over them. They are the embodiment of ensuring archaic status quo. Anything disrupting that is a threat in their eyes.

In Short:
Their relationship would strengthen a loyalty that Jujutsu Headquarters cannot control through clan hierarchy or institutional authority.

And I think it is that final point that is probably what would concern Jujutsu society most.

The danger is not that Satoru Gojo (their god-tier level weapon in their eyes) loves another man from the establishment’s perspective, but rather it is that Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto might decide that their loyalty to each other matters more than their loyalty to the system.

This would be viewed as “dangerous” in the eyes of the clans and higher-ups for the very obvious reason of how powerful they are. The moment they feel their sense of control slipping…I see them trying to set things into motion to retain that power.

It all boils down to that: Power. Who has it? Who gets to keep it? What does it look like in this society?

I see Gojo/Geto being extremely protective of one another if they were together and Jujutsu society knew about it. Depending on WHEN they entered into their relationship (teen or as young adults after graduation), they would have to learn to navigate complex power plays from multiple systemic angles, establish their own core beliefs/ideologies, and ultimately, understand what support looks like for each other as individuals and also as a couple.

And I do think they would ultimately just create their own system FASTER together than what Gojo was trying to do in canon.

Just some thoughts I wanted to share! Didn’t know if anyone had covered this before but curious to get people’s thoughts/discussions.

Edited to add one more important point:
I would love to see ANYONE from any of the clans or the higher-ups (who are made up of people from the clans) try to tell Satoru Gojo he can’t be in a relationship with someone, SPECIFICALLY Suguru Geto.

I don’t see Gojo taking being told what to do about his personal affairs very well, even MORE SO if it has anything to do with Geto.

I see the higher-ups scheming and plotting against them more than adversely and vocally telling Gojo and Geto what to do.

Hell hath no fury like two pissed off Special-Grade Sorcerers in JJK - and if they were romantically involved on top of it? 😩 Good luck!

I have been reading some amazing AU fanfics on AO3 recently but have yet to find any compelling fanfics that are Gojo-focused, well-written, and with superb characterization that are either in-universe or even canon adjacent (set in the JJK universe but maybe an alternate timeline, time travel, fix-it,etc.)

I would love to see if anyone has any reccos for FFs that fit this criteria. The AUs are quite impressive but sometimes I yearn to read about Gojo in the actual JJK-verse (100 points if he is actually written just like his character very well!)

I love mature/adult themes, angst, slow burn, AU.

Preferably, I need a happy ending because if I want a sad one, I’ll just re-read the manga for the umpteenth time (or watch JJK0 and get depressed).

I just finished devouring Handle with Care by aonusumika and it literally left me breathless! It was absolutely so beautiful and well-written that I’m nervous that I won’t find anything like it again. (Strongly recommend it!)

Please feel free to give me all of your recs! I need to forget about my hectic work week and drown into a fanfic abyss of my favorite ship.

I randomly decided to re-read the manga after finishing Season 3 and I genuinely forgot how hard Gojo’s death hits me.

What’s weird is that it’s been years. The series is over. I’ve had plenty of time to process it. I already know exactly what’s coming. I even understand why Gege felt he had to do it from a story perspective. This isn’t another “he shouldn’t have died” post.

But I got to that chapter and had to put the manga down because I actually felt upset all over again.

I know he’s fictional. I know the story has moved on. I know there are bigger tragedies in the series. Yet seeing it happen again felt like getting punched in the stomach. I even shed a tear, which honestly surprised me because I knew every panel that was coming.

I think part of it is that Gojo was such a massive presence in the story for me. He wasn’t just a strong character. He was the emotional center of the series in a lot of ways. His confidence, loneliness, hope for the next generation, all of it. Watching him disappear so abruptly still feels jarring.

The strange thing is that the feeling hasn’t really faded with time. If anything, re-reading made me realize I never fully got over it.

And that’s why I’m honestly not looking forward to seeing it animated.

Usually animation elevates a moment and makes it more exciting. In this case, I almost dread it. The voice acting, the music, the inevitable flood of clips online… I feel like it’s going to hit even harder than it did in the manga.

Am I the only one who still feels this way years later?
Not necessarily angry. Not arguing that it shouldn’t have happened. Just genuinely sad whenever I revisit it.

I’m curious if anyone else has a character death that still affects them long after a series ended, or if Gojo’s death is still one that hasn’t fully settled for you either.

Hopefully this is a safe space to discuss.
